Homer Clarence Gary, age 86, of Spartanburg, SC passed away on Monday, November 10, 2025. Born July 25, 1939 in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Annie Bell Gary and William Ross Gary. Homer was the husband of Marlene Moore Gary for 59 years.
Homer graduated from Spartanburg High School and Spartanburg Junior College (now Spartanburg Methodist College). He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force, having served in Vietnam.
He started his career at Milliken & Company and later became a successful businessman in Real Estate. Homer was a Real Estate Broker for over forty years, having owned his own company in the 1970’s and later becoming Director of Real Estate for Mr. Zip Convenient Food Stores, Inc. Homer retired as Vice President of the original Li’l Cricket Food Stores, Inc., having spent twenty years with the company.
Homer was a former member and officer of the Spartanburg Board of Realtors and a former F.H.A. appraiser. He also served as Director of the SC Convenient Food Stores and was a former member of the Spartanburg Sertoma Club. Homer was a member of the Country Club of Spartanburg and active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. A devoted family man, he loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them at his lake home, where wonderful memories were made. The family annual beach trips were also special to him. Homer will be remembered for his friendly personality and especially his infectious smile.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marlene Moore Gary; daughter, Mitzi Gary Nettles and husband, Heyward Nettles, of Spartanburg, SC; son, Benjamin Todd Gary and wife, Abby Hamilton Gary, of Greenville, SC; and grandchildren, Heyward Benjamin Nettles, Harrison Gary Nettles, Hampton Rutherford Nettles, Jacob Myers Gary, and Hamilton Severs Gary. Along with his parents, Homer was predeceased by his four brothers, Ross, Edward, Thomas, and Jesse Gary. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Visitation will be 12:00-12:45 PM on Monday, November 17, 2025 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1320 Fernwood Glendale Rd, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 PM in the church, conducted by Rev. Megan Gray.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Homer’s memory to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1320 Fernwood Glendale Rd, Spartanburg, SC 29307, or to American Legion Post 28, PO Box 391, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
