Lt. Col. (Ret) Homer Roderick Hunt, age 92, beloved husband of the late Ann Frances Richmond Hunt, passed away on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at his residence.
Born in Canton, Ohio on February 5, 1933, he was the son of the late Carl Roderick Hunt and Margaret Emma Smick Hunt. Homer was a Sigma Chi at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio graduating in 1955. He participated in ROTC and was a member of the OU College Swim Team.
Homer was commissioned June 12, 1955, through ROTC at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. He entered active duty January 10, 1956, and attended Undergraduate Pilot Training (Class 57-1) beginning February 1957. After 25 years of active duty service, he retired March 1, 1981. During his active duty service, Col. Hunt logged 4240 hours in the following airplanes: PA-18, T-6G, T-33, F94C, F89J, C-47 (Co-Pilot), T-37, T-38, RF-101, RF-4C, T-39, & O2A.
During the Vietnam War, based at Udorn Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, then Major Hunt flew 100 missions over North Vietnam.
His awards and decorations include: Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal (2 Clusters), Air Medal (10 Clusters), Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Combat Ready Medal, National Defense Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Korean Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal & Vietnam Campaign Medal.
In retirement, Homer worked for United Services Life Insurance Co. and served as a past Commander of American Legion Post 15, past Flight Captain of the Order of Daedalians, past President of Swamp Fox Chapter of the Air Force Association and was a 32nd Degree Mason.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas R. Hunt and fiancé Capt. Laura Bass of Clemson, SC and Steven W. Hunt and wife Juli of Las Vegas, NV; two daughters, Chris Ann O'Brien and husband Dr. Stephen of Clemson, SC, and Traci K. Forbes and husband Raymond of Manning, SC; a sister Diane Davis, and her husband Denzil of Magnolia, Ohio; five Grandchildren and eight Great Grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Hunt and Ray Hunt.
A memorial service will be held Friday, November 28, 2025, at 1 PM at St. Marks Methodist Church, 27 Broad St.,
Sumter, SC 29150. If you are unable to attend, a recording of the service will be made available on this page.
In lieu of flowers, Homer supported the following organizations, St. Marks Methodist Church in Sumter, St. Judes and Tunnels for Towers.
