Homer “Hank” Zartman

Homer "Hank" Zartman passed away at age 87 on September 29, 2025. A native of Powhatan, Virginia, Hank made history early in life as the smallest surviving baby born in the state at the time.

After graduating from Powhatan High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving four years. His passion for mechanics led to a long career, culminating in his retirement from Ball Metal in Williamsburg, Virginia. Even in his spare time, he could often be found in his garage, repairing cars for friends and neighbors.

Later in life, Hank found purpose in working with the Marine Corps League. He was personally responsible for bringing the League to the Peninsula area of Hampton Roads and the chartering of the Yorktown Detachment 1173. He served as the first Senior Vice Commandant and held various positions within the Detachment. He attended over 750 funeral services for fellow Marines, faithfully honoring them in his signature "Red Jacket." For his unwavering dedication, he was awarded the prestigious Marine Corps League Distinguished Citizen Medal – Gold.

Hank is survived by his daughters, Lisa Church (Mark), Lynne Flanary (Bruce), and Dawn Tone (Keith); eight grandchildren, Lauren Church, Erica Watkins (Chris), Rachel Church, Elise Morris (Ryan), Christin Piercy (Shan), Emily, wife of his late grandson Evan Flanary, Ashley Swift (Luke), Coty Springer, and; and nine great-grandchildren, Neil Morris, Owen Morris, Oliver Morris, Chloe Piercy, Isla Piercy, Lydia Piercy, Julie Piercy, Harper Flanary and Laney Swift.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 5th at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Liberty Live Baptist Church, 1021 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, VA. A graveside service will follow on Thursday, October 9th at 3:00 p.m. at Powhatan Community Cemetery, Powhatan, VA.
