Horst Rechelbacher Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 16, 2014.
OSCEOLA, Wis. (AP) — Minneapolis-based Aveda Corp. says the founder of the beauty-products company has died at his Wisconsin home at the age of 72.

A notice posted on Aveda's website says Horst Rechelbacher died in Osceola, Wis., on Saturday after an illness.

Rechelbacher was an Austrian immigrant who founded the company in 1978. He started with one salon that he turned into larger company that he eventually sold to Estee Lauder Cos. for $300 million.

Aveda sells hair-care and skin-care products for men and women.

Aveda Global President Dominique Conseil says Rechelbacher will be remembered for his vision and leadership. She says in a statement he brought holistic beauty to the industry, "connecting hair, face and body as one."

The St. Paul Pioneer Press says Rechelbacher was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2011.

I am grateful for having had the life changing experience of being one of Horst's students and personal assistants while completing his cosmetology program. Horst mentored us in the conception and practice of beauty as holistic health--mind, body, and spirit. Horst was an inspiring visionary and advocate of holistic health before natural health became commercialized, at a time (at least in Minneapolis) when mainstream people derided us as health freaks for having natural diets and lifestyles. I will forever treasure his teachings and spirit.

It'been several months now, that Horst has "left the bldg". What a force of nature he was:)I first met Horst as a student at U of MN; back in 1968, he had a very different persona, but the brilliance & charisma were so evident. It only took him a "NY min." to build a following in MN as well as entire country; he was quite the star of trade shows. After grad the U, I moved out of MN, but caught up with him at his beautiful spa in Osceola, WI. The playful wunder kin had matured into a serious Professional of immense wealth. Fortunately he never lost that twinkle in his eye or that big wonderful laugh. Planet Earth was a better place, because he lived. For those who loved him, it's a sadder place & my heart goes out to his immediate family & close friends. May his memory be for a blessing.

How many people does a person meet once and remember forever? Back in around 1967, Horst had one salon. It was on Ford Pkwy--in the basement if my recollection hasn't warped with age. I was 16, maybe 17. I thanked my mom for letting me have Horst do my hair for a special occasion. She told me I was lucky that Horst accepted me for the appt. He must have been incredibly busy even back then. I remember the experience and the elegant hairdo even now.
My personal experience was only an introduction to the man. Thank you, Horst, for changing people and the planet. Horst's family, friends, and associates, my heartfelt condolences.

In 1973, I had the honor of having Horst cut my hair, at the Horst and Friends salon in Deephaven, MN. He turned a grown out seventies shag, into a magical one length bob with a side part. The best haircut I ever had! I had my high school graduation portrait done with that haircut. I never received more compliments on any haircut, past or present. He was truly an artist!

"Hi Horst,my name is Margie Fire."
Every time I saw Horst, whether at his education center where I was a student,or at the Osceola Spa,during the years I served as an Aveda representative in the Washington,DC area. After awhile,Horst began responding,"Yes,I know you are Margie Fire!"this was my effort at humor.I like to think he knew I was having fun with him.
I respected Horst very much.I learned a tremendous amount from him,and I met so many interesting people due to my association with Aveda. To this day,I remain in touch with a number of my clients, even though I now live in the Cleveland area.
I keep the precious memories of my relationship with Aveda deep in my heart.Always will.
Rest in peace,Horst.

Although occasions such as the loss of a loved one can bring sadness, comfort can be ours if we draw close to God in prayer with the assurance that he will respond to our request by easing our pain and filling our thoughts with pleasant memories. My heart goes out to the family of beloved Horst of Austria. I am a retired cosmetologist that used to be in the audience and chosen as Horst's platform haircut example. He would say to me, "I love your naturally curly red hair!" NOW, I am on the Adoray Board and can not thank him enough for his generous donation to Adoray! His legacy will live on in serving the natural heath, body and spirit in people that are near the end of their lives in a caring, supporting loving Adoray Hospice environment. Thank you. Thank You.
