Hortensia Macías was born August 4, 1929 in Dallas, Texas, to Alfonso Macías and Altagracia Dávila. She had 2 sisters and 3 brothers. They were migrant farm workers who worked and lived in both Mexico and the U.S.
Hortensia grew up to be exceptionally intelligent and talented, although she would never recognize or admit that. She married Henry Calvin Gunter in 1955. As an adult, she learned to speak, read, and write English. Many relatives and friends felt her love through her consistent letters. Hortensia was an excellent cook and seamstress. She made many of her children's clothes. She made the best Mexican food!
Hortensia passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025, at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by all of her siblings, her dear husband, Henry Calvin, and her daughter, Jennie Lee. Her legacy lives on through her 6 children, 30 grandchildren, and 59 great-grandchildren.
