Howard Albert Baker, a man of profound character and a heart of gold, passed away peacefully at his home in Owego, NY, on October 31, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on June 19, 1934, in East Rutherford, NJ, Howard's journey through life was marked by his loving nature, wisdom, and handy skills, traits that endeared him to all who knew him.
Howard's early years were spent in East Rutherford, where he was cherished by his parents, Albert and Grace Baker. His life was one of dedication and service, which was evident when, following his high school graduation, he enlisted in the US Marines. He proudly served his country from 1953 to 1955, a testament to his unwavering sense of duty.
After his military service, Howard found his calling in the construction industry. His talent as a contractor led him to work for IBM. In the 1980s, Howard's entrepreneurial spirit shone through when he became the owner and operator of "The Creamery," a beloved establishment that provided a safe and enjoyable space for young people to gather and dance.
Howard was not only a successful businessman but also a pillar in his community. He served as a Boy Scout leader in Nichols, inspiring and guiding the youth with his sage advice and caring demeanor. His handlebar mustache was as memorable as his kindness, and many will recall his hard exterior that belied a generous and loving interior.
An avid outdoorsman, Howard enjoyed the tranquility of hunting and the satisfaction of gardening. His connection to nature was a source of joy and peace throughout his life.
Howard's legacy is lovingly carried on by his devoted wife of 30 years, Joan E. Baker, and their blended family of children and their spouses: Alan Baker and Linda Morris, Richard and Colleen Baker, Tim and Sue Baker, Tammy Baker, Mary Jo Baker, Mark and Lori Baker, Pamela and John McCarthy, Carol Singer and Jon Binzen, Wendy Singer, and Theron Singer. His grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and happiness, include Philip and Kyla Baker, Thomas and Sherry Baker, Athena Baker, Kylie Baker, Devon and Courtney Baker, Aubrey and Judah Kitchel, Jered and Lorenzo Baker, MacRay McCarthy, Aidan McCarthy, Erin Kovalsky, Oli Binzen, Fiona Binzen, Christopher Kopacko, Patrick Kopacko, and Dana Renault. Howard was also a great-grandfather to several great-grandchildren who will miss his warm presence. He is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert and Sherry Baker, Curtis and Janet Baker, and his cherished canine companions, Buddy Boy and Kelty. Howard's nieces, nephews, and many friends will fondly remember his generous spirit. He was predeceased by his parents and his grandson, David L. Goodwin, Jr.
Howard's life was a testament to the power of kindness, the importance of community, and the enduring strength of family bonds. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life on Sunday, November 9th from 1- 3 pm at the Nichols American Legion.
