Howard Lee Lucas



Howard Lee Lucas, age 61, of Manassas Park, passed away May 4, 2009 after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born November 14, 1947 in Niagara Falls, N.Y, he was the son of Edward and Carol Hartley Lucas. On October 2, 2000, he married the former Susan Hilt, who survives.

Howard was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in many areas of the United States and around the World. He received many certifications and extensive training in geology, meteo-rology, hydrology, earth science and civil engineering. Howard later worked as a Maintenance Specialist for the Manassas City Public Schools for 20 years.

He was an avid stamp collector with many specialized collections including the Railroad, Education Medical, Red Cross, Christmas and Win-the-War. Howard has also contributed to numerous articles to the Stamp Collector Newspaper, The American Philatelic Magazine, and many others, and has served as the President of the Eastern Prince William Stamp Club. He has also held active memberships in the US Meter Stamp, Italian (ACIAM) Meter Society, and the Czechoslovakian and German Societies. Most recently, Howard was a member of the Manassas Host Lions Club, and very active in the LISC Stamps for the Wounded Program the supports hospital veterans in VA Hospitals. He enjoyed speaking German as a second language, and often listened to short wave broadcast from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Along with his wife, he attended the Manassas Assembly of God, and most recently was attending the Soul's Harbor Church of God.

Surviving besides his beloved wife, Susan Lucas of Manassas Park, are his parents, Edward and Carol Lucas of Oakfield, NY; five step-children, Melanie of Germany; Marie Trewartha of Florida; Jamie Trewartha of Dumfries; Willie Trewartha and his wife Ashlee of Falls Church; Charlie Trewartha of Manassas Park; two sisters, Becky O'Donnell and her husband John of Oakfield, N.Y.; and Cathy Lucas of Rochester, N.Y.; and one brother, Tom Lucas and his wife Val of Albany, N.Y.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 8, 2009 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Baker-Post Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Rd. Manassas. A Celebration of Howard's life will begin at 7:00 p.m.in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Robert S. Price officiating. Interment will be private and take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions take the form of a donation to the Manassas Host Lions Club, P.O. Box 177. Manassas, VA 20108.
