Colonel Howard MacCord Sr.

I met Col. MacCord through my father's WWII reunions with the 167th Combat Engineering Battalion.Howard will be missed at these events. He was our fearless leader.

“The Colonel” was a born leader, a gracious man and scintillating conversationalist. He died as he lived, with thoughtful purpose and dignity.

Betsy, my heart and prayers go out to you. What a lucky - lucky man he was to have found you as his mate.

Howard, we will all miss you very much and your words of wisdom from a rich life of experiences. You will always be with us in our thoughts and memories.

To Mrs. MacCord and all of Howard's Family--
We will deeply miss Howard, as will all of the archaeological community. No meeting will ever be quite the same, although we will always expect to turn a corner and find the Colonel. He was a pioneer and it was an honor to know him. Our thoughts are with you.

Please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss of this fine man. The only time I ever saw him was as the speaker at a club meeting. His heartfelt enthusiasm, love of, and knowledge of Indian life was tremendous. I hope those in the family inspired by the same "bug" can continue on with his work.

Hi, Betsy - I met you at Art and Allison's house in Greensboro quite a while ago. I am so sorry to hear of Uncle Howard's death but I know he had a great life and was ready for whatever lay before him. My mother was married to Robert, the older brother and she passed away almost 3 years ago. I have many fond memories of visiting Uncle Howard in Staunton, VA when he had a skating rink. We loved to visit them in the summer.

I know what you must be going through at this time - I know how difficult it was when Mom died but she was ready - we just didn't want to let go. You and the family will be on my mind in the coming days and weeks.

Words cannot express the sense of loss I feel in Howards absence. He was a presence in my life from my earliest memories and a friend of mine, my parents, uncle, and grandparents. I believe that he can truely be described as the "Father of Archaeology" in Virginia. To
Howard I can only say; I will see you when the roses bloom again.

Uncle Howard,
What a fine man they clearly don't make them any finer his apprearance was always that of authority and knowledge of which he was .The time passes much to quickly we lose site its not forever I wished I could have spent 1 more day with Howard and Betsy . Know doubt Howards in a place with family and he will be looking over Betsy.
I thank God for Betsy looking out for Uncle Howard all these years .

To Howard's family, and especially Betsy: Howard was a mentor and a gadfly for Virginia's archeological community, and we all depended upon his sage advice. For that he will be sorely missed by all. More importantly, this gentle man and his lady will always occupy a warm place in my heart for the times they reached out in friendship and concern to me personally. The relationship was special.
