I remember him very well from high school in 1981,I think was the date.He was very kind to me.I was one of those kids who didn't like school much, and found myself in detentions towards the end.He picked me up hitch hiking home, and made it very clear how dangerous it was,he took concern.I just remember he was a great guy,and the kids respected him.Sorry for your loss.Peace to your family.

So sorry for your loss. Hugh Johnson was a coach, teacher and father-figure to me at a crucial time in my life, and I so appreciated him. To this day, I use his name for on-line security questions that ask for your favorite teacher's name. I thank God for his life. God Bless You and your family!. Joseph Altschul, SHS Class of 81

I am so saddened to hear of Hugh's passing. I have many happy memories of my time at Pinkerton Academy when he taught U.S. History and coached the football team. He was my teacher but also a mentor to my group of fellow classmates, who he affectionately dubbed "the Mafia." I will always remember him fondly as a friend. My condolences to your family. 8/23/2018

My sincere condolences to Coach Johnson's family. He was a great coach, but even a better mentor. I was a real "screw up" back in 1968-72 while playing for him at Salem but he put up with my antics. Like the time I was supposed to wash a teachers' car for "Slave Day" but blew its transmission leaving rubber in the high school parking lot - well, it was Maz & Murray too. That's one of many, many incidents he had to deal with, and deal with it he did in a reasonable, fatherly "old school" way. I admire him now for putting up with it (and us).
We stayed in touch over the decades and, looking back, he had a tremendous impact on my life which carried over to my time as an assistant high school football coach here in northern CA. May he rest in peace.

Thank you seems inadequate for the valuable lessons you taught me that have stayed with me for my entire life. I may have forgotten my American History (sorry Coach) but the things I learned from you on the field of play, teamwork, perseverance, fair play, those are life lesson I will never forget. I am also grateful for the friendship you gave to my dad, it meant the world to him to have such a good friend. The mark or legacy that a teacher or coach leaves behind cannot usually be seen or touched. It is not cast in stone. It can be heard in the many voices of the students and players influenced by the lessons you taught them. Thank you Coach.
