When I was a little girl, you showed me what I thought was the most amazing feat ever done with a piece of string: Jacob's ladder. You could do it lickety-split, and I was fascinated. You tried to teach me and might have succeeded in manipulating the string on my little hands so that I, too, could at least *hold* a Jacob's ladder, but I certainly was never able to accomplish the thing of my own accord. For some reason this crossed my mind today, and I determined that I could--and would--learn it now, now that my fingers are those of an adult and perhaps are better at minding me. So, Mr. Mack, it is with great pleasure that I tell you: I can now do Jacob's ladder. And every time I do it, I will think of you. Thank you, Mr. Mack, wherever you are.
