Hugo Armbrecht

On Monday, October 16, 2023, Hugo August Armbrecht passed into the waiting arms of his beloved Savior, at the age of 104. He was a resident of Windsor Manor, Nevada, Iowa.
Hugo was born September 6, 1919 at State Center, Iowa to William Andrew and Elsie (Eggers) Armbrecht. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in rural State Center. He graduated from Clemons High School in 1936 and entered the U.S. Army in 1942. He served valiantly in the Pacific Theater, earning the Silver Star and was discharged in 1945. His Honor Flight trip in 2009 was a highlight of his life.
Hugo married Muriel Garnet Wengert on August 5, 1945. Hugo and Muriel moved to Colo in 1946 and farmed with Muriel's parents, Leon and Eleanor Wengert.
Hugo was active in many organizations including serving as President of the Story County Farm Bureau, Colo Farmers Co-op Board, Colo Telephone Co. Board and New Albany Township Clerk for 45 years. He joined the Colo Lion's Club in 1982. Hugo was a 72 year member of the American Legion. He was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School and served as a church officer. After retirement, he enjoyed numerous hobbies which included weaving rugs, making scrapbooks of local and world events, growing flowers and vegetables, and visiting friends and relatives.
Hugo is survived by sons Dr. Paul (Marlene) Armbrecht of Rockwell City, Iowa; Allan (Linda) Armbrecht of Colo, Iowa; son-in-law Dar Norrington of Fenton, MI; and daughter Jean (Larry) Rupp of Berne, Indiana. Hugo had 13 grandchildren, Eric (Jenni) Armbrecht; Todd (Chelsea) Armbrecht; Amy (Bill) Sadera; Alyssa (Scott) Randall; Aaron (Sarah) Armbrecht; Megan (Jeff) Merseth; Adam Armbrecht; Tyler Armbrecht; Marc (Kathy) Norrington; Kelli (Marcus) Doan; David Rupp IV; Mary (Jeremy) Hall; Nathan (Kara) Rupp; and 31 great-grandchildren. Surviving are one brother, Kenneth, as well as sisters-in-law, Edith Armbrecht and Margery Armbrecht. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 74 years, Muriel; four brothers, Joseph, Richard, Louis, Sherwood; one sister, Pauline; and daughter, Joyce Norrington.
There are also many acquaintances, friends, and relatives that remember Hugo as a vigorous supporter of what was right and good through all times. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Lutheran Family Services or to the family for distribution.
Hugo donated his earthly body to Des Moines University for medical science. Memorial services will take place on Tuesday, October 24 at 11:00 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church in State Center with a visitation beginning at 9:00 A.M.
