Ian Flanders Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 22, 2015.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Organizers and media reports say American base jumper Ian Flanders has died in a parachute accident during a nature sports festival in eastern Turkey.

Flanders plunged into a river and died when his parachute ropes got wrapped around his legs during a jump from the Karanlik canyon in Turkey's Erzincan province on July 21. His body was pulled out of the Karasu river, a tributary of the Euphrates, by rescue boats and taken to the Erzincan state hospital morgue.

The Dogan news agency said the 37-year-old from southern California had leapt from an altitude of some 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) when the accident occurred.

The Erzincan Municipality said the International Nature and Culture Festival was canceled because of Flanders' death.

I can recall 3 years ago meeting your friend Mathias and you for dinner and a movie after you both had gone skydiving earlier that day. You mentioned that you were recovering from a base jumping injury. I could see in your eyes just how passionate you were about your sport and how the risk was worth every moment! Even though our encounter was very brief, that moment still remains in my thoughts to this day and is an inspiring driving force in my own life! I was truly deeply saddened to read the news. May we all be so brave to follow our passions and dreams that bring us joy and live life to the fullest! May your kind soul rest in peace Ian...your beautiful spirit will remain in every life you've touched! Toula

What a great tragedy to your family and friends. I wish to extend my deep condolences. Though we was never created to die , hope your family can gain strength knowing that our creator just view us as being asleep. John11:11,13,14. Just as Jesus viewed Lazarus. please draw comfort knowing that the conditions we suffer now are only temporary.

Those who dare sometimes pay the ultimate price. But theirs is not to sit idly by and let the sands of time tediously drain away. While the body may be gone, the spirit continues to soar and inspires those who unflinchingly choose to follow an adventurous course for what brief time we have on this mortal coil. Rest In Peace.

Ian, you did more than most of us couch potatoes did in a lifetime. You died doing what you loved to do, and risking your life in doing so.

I still sit here on a couch, wanting to do what you have done but lacking the courage. I salute you, my friend.

I knew Ian for many years but not as a talented base jumper but a member of the medical community that was looked up to as a very technically savvy and talented Registered Sleep Technologist. He has helped countless people deal with their issues related to obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep related problems. Ian was a great man with a thirst for life. My condolences and prayers go out to his family. He will be missed!
