"A LIFE WELL LIVED"
Mother Idella Johnson Brooks was the second child born to Stell and Bennie LaFond Johnson on November 4, 1929 in Gonzales County Texas.
Mother Brooks accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Walker's Chapel in the Newtonville Community. She received her general education at the Rockford Church School and the Newtonville School. Later, for higher education; she attended school in Flatonia, Texas. Being raised in the rural areas of Moulton and Gonzales counties, she worked right along with her father in sharecropping and farming as their way of living.
In 1951, she married Calvis V. Brooks Sr, a distinguished World War II Army Veteran. To this union was born eight children: Calvis Jr, Frederick, Kenny, Beverly, Della, Ben, Janie and Ronald. The family was raised in Moulton and also attended the Methodist Church there.
Mother Brooks and children moved from Moulton to
San Antonio, Texas in 1959. After all children became school age, she became active in the Parent Teachers Association (PTA), worked with the after school programs, award programs and other fundraising activities in the school district.
While in
San Antonio, Texas, she was a faithful member of Holy Temple of Jesus Christ #7 under the pastoral leadership of the late Lonnie B. Johnson; where she served as Sunday School teacher, choir member, and leader of the Holy Temple Youth Bible Band (HTYBB).
In 1970 she joined World Mission Church, also in
San Antonio, Texas. She and the family attended regularly. The church was later named New Testament Holiness Church and was re-located to Cuero Texas. Her son, Calvis Brooks Jr became Pastor. Mother Brooks was part of the Sister-2-Sister Fellowship Ministry, she served on the Care and Comfort Committee and participated in other various activities of the church. She was a willing and dedicated member to the work of the ministry at her church. She attended and served faithfully until her health began to decline. Her life was a great example of a praying mother and a mother of faith.
Mother Idella Johnson Brooks departed this life on February 2, 2026. She is preceded in death by her husband, Calvis Brooks, Sr; three children, Calvis Brooks Jr, Frederick Brooks and Beverly Joyce Brooks. Also preceding her in death is her parents; three sisters, Rosie L. Pullin, Anita Jones, and Andy Less Johnson; one brother, JV Johnson.
She leaves to cherish her fond memories: five children; Kenny Brooks, Della Jean Brooks, and Janie Brooks all of Cuero Texas; Ben (Adeline) Brooks of
San Antonio, Texas; Ronald (Ola) Brooks of Seguin, Texas and daughter-in-law Veda Brooks of
San Antonio, Texas. Eight grandchildren: Cassandra (Silas) Crawford, Ben Brooks Jr, Trevor Brooks, Jerome (LaKesha) Brooks, Chaun (Nicole) Brooks, Darnell Brooks, Reginald (McKenzie) Brooks and Raziel Brooks. Five great grandchildren: Alana, Malachi, Chole, Jordin, and Andrea. One sister, Annie Jane Johnson; and cousin Willie Lee Johnson. She also leaves to cherish her memories a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
