Ilene Audrey Heffelbower, a long time resident of Highland, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025, while surrounded by her loving family. She was 95 years old.
Remembered as a beloved mother, devoted wife, and cherished friend. Ilene, known as the greatest mother ever, and most supportive wife, left us peacefully, joining her beloved husband, Bill, in eternal rest.
Ilene dedicated her life to serving others, starting with her role as a school bus driver, where she ensured the safety and well-being of countless children in her community. She spent over 25 years as a Sunday school teacher at Highland United Methodist Church, imparting wisdom and kindness to the next generation. Her career began as a librarian for Huron Valley Schools, and she later joyfully embraced her role as a special education teacher's assistant when the new program was introduced.
The legacy of love and guidance she instilled in her children will be felt forever, as they reflect on the beautiful job she did in raising them. Ilene was not only a wonderful mother but also a nurturing nanny, aiding in the upbringing of the McFall boys, Pat, Mike, and Curt. She extended her caring nature onto Sarah and David Campbell, beloved children of Earl and Jo, always putting others' needs before her own.
For many years, Ilene served as the chairperson of the United Methodist Women, working tirelessly to uplift her community. In continued and complete dedication, she adored the role of lead caregiver for her mother, Alta after Grandpa passed away at the age of 94.
Traveling was one of Ilene's greatest joys, especially her adventures with Bill, as they explored the world together and cherished their time camping around Michigan. After Bill's retirement, they settled into a mobile home at a KOA in Florida, where they cultivated enduring friendships. They ultimately built a new "bluebird" home in Ocala, enjoying many snowbird years together with their newly retired Florida friends in which they adored.
Ilene's talent as a seamstress was remarkable; she crafted beautiful crocheted blankets for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends, and those in need. Throughout her life, she embraced the role of co-pilot; but in reality, was a gentle Commander and Navigator throughout their marriage, guiding and supporting Bill. After his passing, she courageously transitioned into the role of pilot, navigating life's challenges while carrying the love of her partner in her heart.
Though Ilene may never fully comprehend the impact she had on the lives she touched, her gentle spirit and selfless service will forever be remembered. She leaves behind a legacy of love, devotion, and kindness to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was the ultimate servant of all people.
Daughter of the late Percy and Alta Duncan, Ilene is survived by her children, Sharon (Joseph) Gaffka, Steven (Pamela) Heffelbower and Roger Heffelbower; 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; also many extended family and dear friends.
Ilene is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, William "Bill" Heffelbower; brothers, Dale and Percy Allen Duncan.
