It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ilene Marie Sullivan, who left us peacefully on Saturday, October 25, 2025, in her beloved hometown of
Jacksonville, Florida, where she was born on January 15, 1942. Ilene was a beacon of love and strength, cherished by all who knew her.
Born to Jack Hopkins and Esther Hoxen, Ilene was raised in a nurturing environment that instilled in her the values of hard work and compassion. She grew up surrounded by family, the bonds of which she treasured throughout her life. Ilene was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Esther, her father, Jack, and her sister, Jacqueline Mercer, all of whom she missed dearly.
Ilene's educational journey began in the Duval School System, where her determination and dedication led her to graduate with honors from Stanton College Preparatory School. She furthered her education at Florida State College at Jacksonville, laying a strong foundation that would serve her throughout her life.
For thirty-four years, Ilene dedicated herself to her career at AT&T, where she was known for her unwavering commitment and professionalism. Her colleagues remember her not just as a hardworking employee but as a loyal friend who was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Outside of her professional life, Ilene was deeply involved in her community, becoming a member of Paxon Revival Center in 1979. Her faith was an integral part of her life, guiding her through both challenges and celebrations.
Ilene was a proud and devoted mother, leaving behind her children, Andre Sapp, Alisa Sapp-Russell, George Sapp III (Winnie), and Victor Sapp (Tracey). She was also the beloved grandmother to seven wonderful grandchildren and a proud great-grandmother to six beautiful great-grandchildren. Family gatherings were a source of joy for Ilene, as she cherished every moment spent with her loved ones.
In addition to her immediate family, Ilene is survived by special friends including Mrs. Emma Neavin, Ms. Anne Richardson, Mr. and Mrs. Tutson, and Mr. and Mrs. Cohen, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many sorrowing friends. Each relationship she cultivated added to the rich tapestry of her life, and her absence will be felt deeply by all.
Ilene's life was marked by kindness, resilience, and an unwavering love for her family and friends. As we remember Ilene, let us celebrate a life well-lived, a heart that loved fiercely, and a legacy of compassion that will inspire us all to cherish each moment. She taught us the importance of family, faith, and community, and for that, we are eternally grateful. Rest in peace, Ilene Marie Sullivan. You will be missed beyond measure.
