Mrs. Duke was born Imogene Ard to John Needham and Claudia Barlar Ard in Speigener, AL on August 8, 1913. She enjoyed a close and loving relationship with her parents and 5 Siblings. Her lifelong interest in reading and writing blossomed in her high school years. She was editor of her school newspaper. The Murphy Hitimes, and continued throughout her life and was also a lifelong animal lover. She married Alvin Duke on July 13, 1935 in Mobile, AL and they raised four children together in Prichard, AL. They shared and avid interest in gardening. Their marriage lasted 61 years until his death on November 26, 1996. After her husband's retirement, they moved to the Albany, GA area in 1978 and became active in the Putney United Methodist Church. Her later years were spent with family in Leesburg, GA. After a period of decling health, she died peacefully at home on Novemeber 4, 2007 at the age of 94. She is survived by their daughters, Claudia Spencer and her (husband) Peter of Putney; Angela Bairos and husband (Joseph) of Templeton, MA; Sharon Tillman of Leesburg, GA; their son James Duke and wife (Susan) of Montgomery, AL; fifteen grandchildren; five Great-grandchildren and her sister, Mildren Leavitt of Columbus, GA. She was preceded in death by husband, both parents, three brothers, one sister, a son-in-law, and 3 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at1:00PM Monday November 12, 2007 at Putney United Methodist Church, followed with interment in Pinecrest Cemetery, Mobile, AL. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to; Putney United Methodist Church P.O. Box 154 Putney, GA 31782.
