Imogene Cates Hendrix, 97 passed away on January 29, 2023, at Presbyterian
Village in Little Rock. She was born on November 12, 1925, in
Morrilton, AR to Elbert and Etta Lemings Cates.
Following the death of her mother in 1931, Imogene was raised by her grandparents, William and Clara Belle Cates. She was happily married to Billy Rea Hendrix for 29 years until his death in 1974. Also preceding her in death were her many friends, including James "Doc" Oliver, her friend and traveling companion for several years.
She is survived by her two children - son Bill Glen Hendrix, and his wife Sheila of Little Rock; and daughter Debra Hendrix Flowers and her husband Dick Flowers of Little Rock.
She is also survived by her two granddaughters (who knew her as "Momo"), Dr. Rebekah Flowers Brown and her husband Jordan Brown of
Franklin, TN; and Erin Flowers and her husband Adam McEvoy of Little Rock.
She is also survived by her five delightful great-grandchildren, Jacqueline, Mitchell, and Adelina Brown of
Franklin, TN.; and Ellis Rose and Lillian Bay McEvoy of Little Rock.
She is also survived by her sister, Linda Gayle Collett of Benton.
Imogene enjoyed dancing, bingo, dominos, casinos, and road trips. The destination never mattered. In anticipation of her first grandchild, she made it clear that she would love to babysit unless she had a better offer, i.e. the opportunity to go dancing. (Dancing shoes were kept in the trunk of her car should that opportunity arise.) She disliked fish, trampolines, and bad weather. She especially disliked bad weather if her family was traveling or if there were a chance it would mess up her hair.
Imogene worked for many years with the Little Rock School District food service where she began as a cafeteria manager at Franklin Elementary and Brady Elementary. She eventually became the manager of the satellite kitchen where she oversaw 19 employees and fed students in nine schools. She retired from her career in 1986.
Imogene loved to volunteer and thought it was something everyone should do. She went door to door for the March of Dimes, made bandages for the Cancer Society, brought refreshments to any meeting, and was on various boards. She also was active in the Women's Auxiliary of the Little Rock fire department and served as Vice-president and President at the state level.
She was the room mother extraordinaire for almost every grade and PTA president. She welcomed her children's friends without hesitation and it wasn't unusual for those friends to drop by to visit her - even when her children weren't present!
Above all, she loved her family and friends and relished spending time with everyone whenever possible. She will be missed for her stories and her quirky narration - both of which will live on for generations.
There will be a graveside gathering this summer in
Dardanelle, AR at Brearley Cemetery.
