Indus Larek Alexander, affectionately known as “Red”, was born on Monday, August 21, 1967 to Albert and Wilma (Harrison) Alexander in St. Louis, Missouri. To this union 5 children were born (3 girls, 2 boys), and Indus was the youngest. Her father, Albert Lee Alexander; maternal grandparents Jimmie and Frances Devres, Sr.; maternal biological grandfather, William H. Harrison; and another sister from Caruthersville, Missouri, Dorothy Jean (Smith) Ross, preceded her in death.
Indus was born with Spina Bifida, a disability of the spine. Doctors told her parents that Indus would not live past the age of five – but despite the odds, she survived and her life continued by God’s grace. She attended Elias Michael School for Crippled Children with the St. Louis Public Schools system, graduating at the age of 18 in June 1986.
At an early age, Indus confessed her hope in Jesus Christ. Growing up in a Christian household with a loving, supportive family of accomplished musicians, singers, writers, and artists, her God-given gifts to sing, write, and draw naturally developed. Bible reading, talent shows, piano playing, and choir rehearsals often filled the family home. Indus’ life was a testimony of God’s loving grace, demonstrated by her praise through prayer, music, and worship.
Over the years, Indus expanded her learning by participating in classes, programs, and workshops. For a short time, she worked at Six Flags Over Mid-America (currently Six Flags St. Louis), and volunteered with organizations such as Paraquad.
Indus genuinely had a love for so many different people. However, those who really knew Indus, know she didn’t play, and every now and then she would give you a look that said every bit of ‘don’t mess with me’. Like all of us, her spirit was low sometimes. Yet even in her down moments, her uplifting personality could light up a room. She loved going places around town. Fellowship always warmed her heart. Indus’ talents and activities included church services, singing in the choir, singing with family and friends, singing at numerous events, teaching children in Sunday school, drawing, writing, making bead jewelry, playing video games, Scrabble, Uno, dancing while seated in her wheelchair, wheelchair basketball, and baking cakes for her family during the holidays. But most of all she loved Praising the Lord! Indus often gave a reminder that the scriptures say, “Make a Joyful Noise!”
“Red” kept the faith doing what she could, even though the last two years brought on multiple health challenges with frequent admissions to the hospital. At Mercy Hospital on Saturday, January 31, 2026, God called her home.
Indus Larek Alexander leaves to cherish her precious memories: her mother, Mrs. Wilma Alexander; siblings, Ericka Gilliam, Winter Alexander, Miguel Kolmar (Carla) Alexander, Darney Alexander; aunt, Frances Gwendolyn (Ronald) Betts; uncle, Jimmie (Pamela) Devres, Jr.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends; and two very special friends: Richard Byrne; and, Rachel Bell (Indus’ roommate at the Delmar Gardens Creve Coeur Nursing Home).
