Irene Hawkins Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by F.B. Pratt and Son Funeral Home, Inc. - Newberry on Aug. 28, 2024.
Mrs. Irene E. Hawkins of the Maybinton Community, Whitmire S.C. completed her assignment here on earth late Thursday evening, August 22, 2024 and entered into the arms of our Savior where he had prepared a place for her; where there is no more pain nor suffering.
"Ms. Irene" to most, or "Honey" (as close relatives referred to her) was born November 15, 1930 in Carlisle, S.C. Irene was the fourth of five children born to Barth and Elma Jeter (both parents deceased; as well as the four siblings: Flora, Lillian, Russell, and Charles).
Irene received her education while attending the Public Schools of Union S.C. She was introduced to her Lord and Savior as a child and joined St. Luke A.M.E. Zion Church at an early age. After marrying and moving to Maybinton, she joined Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church and was a faithful member until her health began to decline. While in service for the Lord at Trinity, she served or chaired various boards, committees, and/or organizations (Deaconess, Treasurer, Missionary, President of the Christian Jubilee and Junior Choirs, President of the Usher Board, Life member of the Lay Council, served as a delegate to the annual conference many years, and was entrusted as the Preacher's Steward).
Ms. Irene was employed in the Textile Industry over 30 years before retiring at age 62 (in 1992). After retirement she expanded her role working in the church she loved; because she loved the Lord and she loved her pastor, Dr. Rev. Eric Rice. They all (Trinity congregation) seemed to love her in return and honored her on various occasions. (While Ms. Irene was a member of Trinity, she also had many friends and family at Seekwell Baptist Church.)
Ms. Irene loved cooking delicious meals for her family. A few of her many specialties were potato salad, homemade banana pudding, cornbread stuffing, and sweet potato souffle. She loved watching Steve Harvey's Family Feud, and Major League Baseball games (unless Maybinton's hometown team, the Happy Dogs were playing).
Irene was married to James Hawkins in 1947; he preceded her in death in 2008. To this union four children were born (Johnsie DeLois Hawkins (deceased), Earl Hawkins, Newbia Hawkins (deceased), and Wilemenia Hawkins, (deceased).
Those left to cherish her memories are son, Earl Hawkins (Genelle) of Charlotte, N.C., grandsons: Richard Bernard Hawkins (Beverly) of Whitmire S.C., Jon-Keith Hawkins (Evelyn) of Charlotte, N.C., and Jamie Hawkins, of Charlotte, N.C.; granddaughter: Regina Davis (Darryl) of Newberry, S.C., great- granddaughters: Damissa "Darissa" Davis, Kenyata Peterson, Brittany Hawkins, and India Cox; great-great granddaughters: Kaitlyn Peterson, Kaliyah Peterson, and Mikayla Davis; great-great grandson: Keshun Peterson; ex-daughter-in-law, Patricia Hawkins, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at 12:00 noon at the Fred B. Pratt Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at Trinity AMEZ Church in Maybinton, SC. Public viewing will be held at the Fred B. Pratt Memorial Chapel on Saturday, August 31, 2024 from 11:30 am to 12:00 noon.
