Iris Harris Obituary

IRIS ANN HARRIS
August 4, 1929 ˜ September 12, 2023

Iris Ann (known by most as Ann) was born Iris Ann Ulen on Aug. 4, 1929, in Bowman ND, to Iver and Inez Ulen. The family, which included her older brother, Harold Ulen, moved to Bozeman, MT, and eventually settled in Coeur’d Alene, ID, where she spent most of her childhood. Ann worked as a nanny for a doctor in Spokane as a teenager, then went on to receive her teaching certificate from Northern College of Education in Lewiston, ID. She later earned a masters degree in music education.

Ann moved to the Washougal area in 1950 to take a teaching position. There she met and married Eugene Harris, a Camas attorney. They had five children, Eugene (Bud) Harris Jr., Wendy Robinson, Loree Schaeffer, Rob Harris and Brian Harris.

Ann belonged to several organizations including The Order of the Eastern Star, Zion Lutheran Church, Church Women United and Two Rivers Heritage Museum. She had many interests, most revolved around her passion for music. She was well known in local music circles. She taught music in the public schools for over 20 years, gave private lessons, and participated in choirs throughout the county; sometimes traveling nationally to perform. Ann served two terms on the Camas City Council.

Ann requested that any remembrances be given to the music department of your favorite church, or to Zion Lutheran Church music department, where she was a contributing member for decades.

Ann’s is survived by her children and their partners, Bud Harris and Donna Sinclair, Loree and John Schaeffer, Rob and Gail Harris and Brian and Angela Harris, and by her many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She asked that her advice to everyone was, “Keep singing everybody: It will lift your heart and soul.”

Services to be held at Straub’s Funeral Home Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. Internment to follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

Ann was a warm, loving, and generous lady. I met her at a class for educators when she was Head Teacher at Mt. Pleasant elementary. Later she volunteered as a tutor in the Reading Lab at Lacamas Heights, which I supervised. She was wonderful; an expert teacher and an always positive, encouraging mentor. She made a difference in her student's lives. Their reading really

improved and they felt good about themselves. I also knew the many ways that Ann volunteered at Zion Lutheran Church. She was truly giving of her time and many talents.

I´m sorry for the loss of your mom you guys. Ann was so great. She always smiled so big. And her voice. I remember her singing at our piano while, probably Barbie, played. Such a beautiful voice. I remember playing at your house and Ann always had snacks for us to eat. She was such a great friend of Mom´s. Mom loved her company. They laughed so much. Sing with the angels Ann. You were greatly loved.

Ann always made me feel like she was delighted to see me. My mom and Ann laughed a lot - I can still hear her laugh. Thank you for the recap of her life. I´m glad to have known her! She was wonderful and made others feel special. Rest in Peace Ann
