Irma Gill Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Castle Ridge Mortuary - West Military Dr. on Mar. 2, 2026.
Irma Magdalena Idrogo Gill, born August 10, 1934 (age 91), passed away peacefully in her sleep the morning of Saturday, February 28, 2026.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Cleofas Justo Idrogo, Sr. and Magdalena Salazar Idrogo; and her siblings: Vivian (Arturo) Arriola, Candelaria Santa Cruz, Celsa Martinez, Josefina Castillo, Cleofas Justo (Ernestina) Idrogo, Jr., Isabel Garcia, and Maria de Jesus Munoz.

She is survived by her children: Antonio "Tony" Gill, Jr. and Irene Gill White; grandchildren: Jasen Anthony Gill, Shaun Kelly Gill, and Karen Elizabeth White; great-grandchild: Angelina Gill; siblings: Herlinda Avila, Ida Luckie, Concepcion (Armando) Tays, and Julio (Linda) Idrogo; and lots of nieces, nephews, and other family members.

Born the seventh of 12 children in Laredo, Texas, Irma was drawn to the medical field as a young teenager, volunteering as a candy striper at Mercy Hospital in Laredo and then continuing her medical career as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) and o ce manager for two doctors of obstetrics and gynecology in San Antonio, Texas.

On November 9, 1952, she married MSgt Antonio Gill, Sr. and traveled extensively with him as a military wife. They lived in Georgia, Louisiana, Guam, Missouri, and several cities in Texas before retiring in San Antonio. Although their marriage ended after 27 years, they were best friends and neighbors for the remainder of Antonio's life, with Irma serving as his caretaker during his final year. In 1985, she married Carlos Martinez. Together, they enjoyed traveling, dancing, and participating in local events such as the rodeo and Fiesta.

Irma was a strong advocate for her son, Tony, and her grandson, Jasen. She fought valiantly and tirelessly for their rights, for grandparent rights, and for equality and justice for persons with special needs. She was an engaged and doting grandmother to Jasen, Shaun, and Karen, and enjoyed caring for her grandnieces and grandnephews as infants as well.

Irma celebrated life and had a gift for maintaining long-term relationships. She was always out on the town and loved to have a good time. She was also deeply rooted in the Lackland Terrace neighborhood where she was part of a tight-knit group of friends and neighbors. Every December, she made tamales and shared them with loved ones. She was a parishioner at Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church and St. Anthony Mary Claret Catholic Church.

For the past two years, Irma was a resident at Legend Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation West, and most recently, a patient under Bristol Hospice. We wish to thank the sta at Legend Oaks and Bristol for the compassionate care of our Mom/Nana. In particular, we would like to thank Marissa Trevino for going above-and-beyond to ensure Mom was always advocated for, encouraged in her recovery, and freshly manicured.

We would also like to thank our Tia Concha, who visited with Mom several times a week for the entire two years to ensure constant and consistent visitation and care. We know that Mom appreciated Tia Concha's love, support, and presence as much as we did.

We will always be grateful to everyone who visited Mom, brought her gifts, and sent prayerful thoughts.
