Irma Mahar Obituary
SARATOGA SPRINGS - Irma M. Mahar, 97, of Saratoga Springs, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2023. Irma was born in Phoenicia, N.Y. the daughter of the late James and Beatrice (Wright) Simpson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Mahar and her son, John J. Mahar.
Irma went to Kingston High School and graduated in 1944. She went to earn a BA degree from Russell Sage College, graduating in 1948. Irma began her career with New York State Dept. of Health as a lab technician in Albany. Then, Irma returned to school to earn a teaching degree from the College of Saint Rose and began a 20+ year career at Forts Ferry School as a second-grade teacher for North Colonie Central School District. In her retirement Irma enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, gardening, vacationing on Lake George and socializing with family and friends.
Irma is survived by her son James E. (Diane) Mahar.
We would like to thank her aides, Tara, Asha, Nadia, Shelly and Devi for their tremendous support and care of Irma over the past four years. We would also like to thank Hospice for their work over the past year. They are truly an outstanding organization of health care professionals.
A private grave side service will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, N.Y.

As a seven year old child, I remember bringing in pics for show and tell. This was 1967 and my pics were from my brother being in Vietnam, rice paddies. Mrs Mahar felt uncomfortable. I didn´t understand why. She loved my family. We loved her. God rest her soul.

Mrs Mahar always remembered you as a wonderful teacher and very nice person. In 2nd grade I got my finger shut on the metal outside door and almost lost my finger . She was so calm and kind and handle the situation without panick while maintaining order in the classroom. You made a difference in my life over 50 years ago. I knew Irma very well when I taught at Forts Ferry School. She was wonderful. I taught special education and her classroom was near mine. She was a tremendous help to the "new kid on the block" way back in the 70s. Irma was a great teacher-not only in her competence, but in her compassion. All knew that she truly cared about them. We had many fine conversations about kids and family. She was very proud of her boys. I am glad that she had such a long life well lived. Condolences to Jimmy and Diane. May she Rest In Peace.

Irma was a lovely Clifton Knolls neighbor. We still have a beautiful peach iris plant she gave us in the 1980's. May she rest in peace.
