Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bunch-Roberts Funeral Home on Dec. 25, 2024.
Longtime Guymon resident, Dr. J. Wayne Morrison, went to Heaven with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 24, 2024 at his home, surrounded by his loving family and caregivers at the age of 86.
John Wayne Morrison was born June 20, 1938 to Lloyd and Minnie Morrison in Mattoon, Illinois. He graduated from Boise City High in 1956 where he met the love of his life, Eleanor Adee. Wayne and Eleanor were married June 25, 1958 in a garden wedding in Boise City, Oklahoma at his parent's home.
He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in business from OPSU and OU and a Doctorate in Optometry from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Morrison served the community of Guymon for 58 years with his optometric practice from 1964 until 2022.
Wayne loved the mountains and he and Eleanor enjoyed their mountain home in Ute Park, NM where Wayne painted the beautiful New Mexico landscapes. His paintings have been featured and sold in galleries in Taos, NM for several decades. He still has paintings in Bryans Gallery in Taos and All Fired Up Gallery in Guymon. Wayne and Eleanor also loved camping in their 5th Wheel during the winters in Port Aransas, TX where he painted and sold beach landscape paintings in local galleries.
He also loved hiking and running. He was proud of the fact that he won first place in his age category in the Guymon Pioneer Day run 25 times (which we are pretty sure is a world record). He ran the race 33 years in a row, until he was 85 years old.
He played the piano beautifully and had a jail ministry and a nursing home ministry for many years. He was an active member of the Guymon First Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon, youth leader and a training union leader.
Dr. Morrison is survived by his wife, Eleanor Morrison of 66 years; his son Kent Morrison and wife Nancy of Elkhart, Kansas; his daughter Kelly Morrison of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grandchildren: Jill Dages and husband, Andrew and Jorie Fulton and husband, Blake; and great grandchildren: Dax Fulton and baby Dages on the way.
The Morrison family would like to thank his wonderful, loving caregivers who diligently cared for him until the very end: Summer Martinez, Charlotte Zamora, Breanna Garcia, Denise Ponce and Gerri Smith.
A visitation with the family will be held on Friday, December 27th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Bunch - Roberts Funeral Home. A private family service will be at the Elmhurst Cemetery in Guymon. Memorials in memory of Dr. Morrison can be made to the First Baptist Church and will be accepted at the church offices or the Bunch - Roberts Funeral Home, PO Box 1112,
