Jack was a stunningly great journalist. I was editor of The Hartford Times; he worked for our joint owner, Gannett. I printed every one of his columns, and was grateful for his insight.

My Sympathy for the Germond family,

I got to meet Jack as a young alderman from the City of Rockford Il. I was elected to the city council in 1975 at the age of 22. Later that year, through a series of circumstances I got involved with Jimmy Carter's presidential campaign. In the early months of 1976 I get a phone call from Jack as a reporter from the Sun. He wants to meet me to talk about Carter. He was doing these local angel stories about that campaign from different parts of the country. What a thrill for this kid from Rockford Il. That was the kind of reporter he was.

We met three times that year before the Illinois primary at Jack's favorite local resturant The Mayflower, were he always ordered bookbinder soup along with his sandwich. I then connected with him as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York City.

I saw him again at 2 more conventions in 1980 and 1992.

It was great to have those little glimpses into the national political scene and to share them with such a great reporter and great guy like Jack Germond.

May he be granted eternal rest.

Jack was the reason I enjoyed watching The Mc Laughlin Group. I last saw Jack in the rental car lot of the DFW Airport. I wanted to say hi, and tell him what a great columnist and reporter he was, but decided not to bother him. I regret that now. Rest in peace Jack. The Germond family has my condolences. Maybe I'll have another chance some day to say hi to Jack in a better place.

My condolences to the Germond family. Jack was a terrific reporter and columnist. I was privileged to know him and on occasion accompany him to the racetrack, where he was even more fun to be with than at the newspaper. He leaves a legacy of excellence.
