A Tribute to a Great Teacher, Mentor and Friend
Our heart is broken. Dr Jack Groover is a great teacher, mentor and supporter. He was not only a leader and president of an outstanding Medical Clinic, but also a very generous and compassionate human being.Suon and I knew Dr Groover since 1976 when I completed my Second year Gastroenterology Fellowship at then University Hospital of Jacksonville under his tutorship. I remembered then that he was not only a great teacher in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, with superb technical skills, but also an outstanding Clinician in Internal Medicine. He was awarded Best Teacher Of The Year on several occasions. What he had taught us was to make everything simple, clear, to the point and practical. Dr Groover's generosity extended beyond friends, colleagues and patients all the way to Cambodia. Borland Groover Clinic buid and fully equipped 4 Endoscopy Units in 2 Hospitals in Cambodia. Dr Kyle Etzkorn and Dr Hong T Tek with 2 teams of Nurses and Endoscopic Technicians had 2 missions in Cambodia to teach the Cambodian physicians and nurses the techniques of Endoscopy.
He will be sorely missed.May he Rest In Peace.
Our sincere condolences to the family.
With great sadness,
Hong Taing Tek, M.D., AGAF

I met DrGroover in the 1970s when he would see patients in consult at StLuke's where I chaired the Anesthesia Department.I had the opportunity to provide anesthesia for many of his patients. He became our Gastroenterologist (myself and wife's)until he ceased clinical practice. In 2009 after 44 yrs of practice I was ready to retire(I was 80 then)but Jack thought I was "too young to retire"and offered me a position at Jax Anesthesia Providers to help at the Borland-Groover Southside location.I finally retired in 2011.Jack always wanted to know if I "was happy"...He will be remembered as a friend,a colleague,a mentor and an example.I was privileged to know this exceptional person.

Dr Groover taught so many of us so many lessons. For me, more than anything, it was leadership.
All the things you read about great leadership were embodied in how Dr. Groover showed up. Whether he was in the GI Lab, at the negotiation table, a board room or bedside during a patients most painful moments, the values I observed were consistent: Trust. Vision. Courage. Compassion. Respect. Consistency. Persistence. Humility....the list is endless.
He knew how to push you to the edge and just before you fell, pull you back to a familiar place of comfort.
And when I think about the tens of thousands of lives he saved through his pioneering vision in gastroenterology, and all those children of those lives he saved, and their children, it should make us all pause and do more good in such a polarized world. He would like that.
Thank you for being great Dr. Groover. Your legacy lives in all of us.

I will always remember Dr. Groover with great admiration and respect. He was a beloved and respected leader. A great contributor to the health care needs of many. He was kind and generous. His memory will never fade among all his gastroenterology colleagues in the state and beyond. My prayers with him and his family.
