Jack “John” Lawrence Schluter entered into eternal rest on October 28, 2025, at the age of 93. Beloved husband of the late Gladys Carney Schluter, to whom he was devoted for 55 years. Loving father of Karen Bucher (Patrick), Amy Piazza (Michael), Laura Bonanno (Gary), John Schluter (Alisa), and Alan Schluter (Nicole). Cherished grandfather of Amanda Betancourt (Carlos), Brendan Piazza, Meagan Maffei (Stephen), Christopher Bonanno, Amber Cain (Christopher), Kasey Eaton (Jonathan), Johnathon Schluter, Jack Schluter, Eva Schluter, and the late Patrick Bucher, Jr. Proud great-grandfather of Addison, Andrew, Jax, Quinn, Grace, Whit, Jonathan Jr., Hudson, Gabriel, and Savannah.

Son of the late Vivian Schluter and Janie Cashin Schluter, and brother of Mary Palmer and the late Jean Monteil. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who will forever remember his kindness and quiet strength.

A native of Mobile, AL and longtime resident of Terrytown, LA, Jack was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving honorably as a Second Lieutenant during the Korean War.

Jack’s life was defined by devotion—first and foremost to his faith and his family. A lifelong Catholic, he was a man of deep and steady faith who lived the Gospel through his service to others. As a dedicated member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, he assisted families in need, stocked the food pantry, and tirelessly fundraised for the annual Walk for the Poor. For his many years of humble service, he was awarded the St. Louis Medallion by the Archdiocese of New Orleans in 2015. He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6870 at Christ the King Church and attended daily Mass faithfully until his health no longer allowed him to do so.

Jack’s devotion extended deeply to his family. After the passing of his beloved Gladys, he visited her grave every day until he could no longer drive—an enduring testament to his love and loyalty. As a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he took great pride in all of their accomplishments and was a steady presence and constant source of support. He never missed an opportunity to celebrate life’s milestones—graduations, sports games, dance recitals, and special family moments. His children and grandchildren adored and admired him not only for his wisdom and quiet humor but for the example he set: a life built on faith, integrity, and unconditional love.

A man of remarkable intellect, Jack had a lifelong passion for learning. An English major at Spring Hill College, his studies were interrupted when he was called to serve during the Korean War, yet his love of language and literature endured throughout his life. He was a gifted writer with elegant handwriting and a keen editor’s eye, always ready to help his family craft everything from school essays to doctoral dissertations. Known for completing even the toughest crossword puzzles with ease, Jack possessed a sharp mind matched only by his humble spirit and quick wit.

His family and friends will forever remember his kindness, his intelligence, and his unwavering faith. Jack leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and devotion that will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to all those who lovingly cared for their Dad over the last few months.

Relatives and friends of the family, as well as members of the Knights of Columbus Council 6870 and St. Vincent de Paul Society, are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the Chapel of MOTHE FUNERAL HOME, 2100 Westbank Expressway, Harvey, LA, on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at 1:30 PM.
