Jack C. Koons, born on December 28, 1925, to Dorothy B. and Floyd C. Koons in Des Moines, Iowa, led a life marked by dedication, service, and love. His family moved to Bradenton, Florida, and later to
Tallahassee, Florida, where Jack's journey of service truly began. A proud Eagle Scout, Jack earned the prestigious rank with 42 Merit Badges, along with Gold, Silver, and Bronze Palms. His deep commitment to scouting saw him achieve VIGIL level in the Order of the Arrow and spend 15 years with the Scouts, including a role as District Commissioner for Leon County.
Jack graduated from Washington and Lee University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and shortly thereafter, joined the Navy Reserves. During World War II, he served as a test pilot in the American, European, and Pacific Theaters, eventually earning the rank of Lieutenant. Following his military service, Jack pursued a career in construction, earning a degree in Building Construction.
Jack was married to the love of his life, Barbara Jean Sapp for 65 years and together they built a family and a beautiful life in Tallahassee. Jack worked with the State of Florida as the Administrator of Building Construction for the Department of General Services retiring in 1988 after 30 years.
Jack's commitment to his country and community extended beyond his professional life. He was a 50-year member of the Civil Air Patrol, rising to the rank of Major and earning the distinction of Command Pilot Rating. Jack was also a 77-year member of the Jackson Masonic Lodge in Tallahassee. Jack attended Covenant Presbyterian Church where he served as both Deacon and Elder.
Above all, Jack was a devoted family man. He leaves behind a loving family who will carry his memory forward, including his cherished daughter, Delsie Koons Bell (Robert); his beloved grandchildren, Lisa Bell Sondesky (Chris), Robbie Bell (Joanna) and Kimberly Bell Rosborough; and six great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy. He was preceded in death by his Father and Mother, Floyd and Dorothy Koons; his wife Barbara Koons; and Grandson in law Marc Rosborough.
Jack C. Koons was a man of great honor, integrity, and love. His legacy of service, leadership, and devotion to his family and community will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Visitation will be held on September 11, 2024, from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM Est in the Chapel of Abbey Funeral Home.
Graveside Service on September 12, 2024, 11:00 AM Est at Tallahassee Memory Gardens.
