Jack Smith Phillips

Jack Smith Phillips, 90, of 202 Phillips Street Hertford, N.C. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 23, 2025 in his home where he was being cared for by his family.

Mr. Phillips was born in Hertford, NC on November 7, 1935 and was the son of the late Zack Webb Phillips and Cornelia Smith Phillips. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Dolores Russell Phillips; one son, Thomas Mitchell Phillips; and brother, Gene W. Phillips.

Together the brothers owned and operated Phillips Furniture Company. Jack Phillips later owned and operated Phillips Auto Sales.

He was a member of Hertford Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, David Phillips of Hertford and Rev. Wallace Phillips (Joy) of Edenton; five grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and extended family members.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 28, 2025 at the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home Chapel, Hertford, NC with Rev. Howard Sutton officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the chapel. Interment will be private at Cedarwood Cemetery, Hertford, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Albemarle Home Care and Hospice, Elizabeth City, NC.
