John "Jack" Roberts passed away peacefully at his home on February 1, 2026, in
South Jordan, Utah, at the age of 92½. He "graduated into Heaven" (his words), while holding the hand of his sweetheart, Jody, and with other family near him. His family and friends are left behind to celebrate his wonderful life and mourn this time away from him until we can see him again.
John was born to George and Martha Roberts in 1933 in California. From a young age, he always went by Jack. He was the second of four children, with an older sister, Georgia, a younger brother, Bob, and a younger sister, Virginia. The family was raised in southern California, living in Temple City, Fontana and Arcadia. He was an adorable baby, winning the baby contest in Eagle Rock, California. Jack loved life and enjoyed each phase. As a youngster, he worked keeping up yards and had 25+ yard jobs by age 14. His kindness started as a young boy; he was always willing to help his family, grandmas and neighbors. Everyone loved Jack. From a young age, he loved the beach, and has many happy memories enjoying the beach with his parents, friends, Jody, children and grandchildren.
Jack attended Pasadena City College in 1952, and then joined the Air Force. When he was called to serve in Korea, he and fiancée Jody decided to quickly plan a wedding and get married before he had to leave. He and Jody were married in 1954 at her parents' home in Pasadena. They had a lovely four-week honeymoon before his departure. They greatly missed each other, but shared their life through daily letters during the 17 months they were apart. After he returned, they enjoyed living their life together and welcoming children into their family. They lived in Logansport, Indiana, where they were excited to have their first child, Debbie. After he was released from active duty, they moved to Pasadena, where he continued his education and began working for American Meter. During this time, they had their son, David. Soon after, they moved to a new home in Covina and their next child, Kathy, was born. Three years later, they moved to their new home in La Mirada, which was closer to Jack's work. Shortly after, they welcomed Chari to their growing family. Five years later, Laura was born and completed their family. During their 16 years in La Mirada, they enjoyed many day trips to the beach, and many week-long camping trips to the beach, lake and mountains. He taught his family the joys of tent and trailer camping, backpacking, and hard work. Jack always said that the most important possession in his life, from childhood to adulthood, was his family, and the way he used his free time reflected that.
Jack grew up in the Methodist faith and always believed in God and life after death. During the La Mirada years, he became converted and baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. So many church members were surprised when they announced he was a new member because he was already involved in church and was serving as Assistant Scout Master. It was a great day one year later when his family was sealed together in the Los Angeles Temple. He served in many church callings throughout the rest of his life, including Executive Secretary, Scout Master and Branch President.
After being with American Meter for 23 years and holding 12 different positions, he left to build their dream home on Robinson Creek in the Eastern High Sierras near Bridgeport, California. They designed their home, cleared and prepared the land, and physically built their lovely two-story home that overlooked their backyard creek. Even though he worked very hard at his very successful appraisal business that he started and built up, he thoroughly enjoyed the 14 years they lived in this remote area, especially when some of the family moved nearby. He and Jody retired to South Jordan in 1994, near two of their children. They enjoyed new friends, opportunities to travel and living near the Jordan River Temple.
Characteristics of Grandpa include his silly jokes and comments, kind manner, fun nicknames for his family, and bear stories. His greatest loves are his sweetheart, Jody, his children and grandchildren, his pets, especially Calli, doing yardwork, visiting the beach, making house plans, and enjoying photographs.
We will dearly miss this loving, handsome man who we are blessed to call Dad, Grandpa and Friend. We look forward to our joyous reunion with him one day. Jack is preceded in death by his parents George and Martha, and siblings Georgia and Bob. He is survived by his wife, Jody, his children Debbie (Len), David (Sherry), Kathy (John), Chari (Kerry), and Laura (Matt), and his sister, Virginia. He is very proud of his 21 grandchildren and 60 great grandchildren.
