Jack Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home and Cremation Chapel - Covington on Feb. 12, 2026.
Mr. Jack Smith, age 87, a lifelong resident of Newton County, passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2026. Born January 8, 1939, in the Almon Community, he grew up in the Covington Mill Community and graduated from Newton County High School in 1957. He continued his education at Georgia State University and served honorably in the United States Army. Mr. Smith spent his career in banking and retired in 2000 as a Vice President from Wells Fargo Bank.

Jack was an avid outdoorsman, finding joy in hunting, fishing, gardening, and cherishing moments with his grandsons. His commitment to youth and leadership was exemplified by his years as a Boy Scout, where he earned the distinguished rank of Eagle Scout-an accomplishment requiring the completion of 21 merit badges.

A man of unwavering faith, Jack grew up attending Lovejoy United Methodist Church and later played a pivotal role in building St. Augustine's Catholic Church at its current location. His love for his community and church was a testament to his generous spirit and dedication.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, J.T. and Myrtice Smith; his beloved daughter, Jacqueline Iris Smith; his sisters, Noami Smith Jeffries and Sandra Smith Hopkins; and his son-in-law, Robert Fritts. He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Mary Smith; his daughter, Yuvette Smith Fritts; his son, Britt Smith (Leslie); his grandchildren Brien Fritts (Katherine), Spencer Fritts, Tanner Smith (Liddy), and Mason Smith (Karley); and his great-grandchildren Britton Fritts, Eliza Smith, and one on the way. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law, Fred Hopkins, along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and many close friends who will forever treasure his memory.

Mr. Smith's legacy will be remembered for his kindness, steadfast faith, and the love he shared with family and friends. He touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A private service will be held at a later date.
