Jack Starnes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jenkins Funeral Home on Jan. 26, 2026.
Jack Martin Starnes, 87, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026, at his home in Hoover Valley, Texas, surrounded by his beloved wife and family. Jack was born on February 21, 1938, in Tulia, Texas, to Hugh and Gladys Starnes, where he began a life defined by service and unwavering love for those around him.

Jack married his high school sweetheart, Lenora Wilkes, on June 9, 1956, in Happy, Texas. Their marriage, marked by love and devotion, spanned nearly seven decades and is remembered as a testament to enduring partnership.

In 1956, Jack enlisted in the United States Army, where he proudly served his country during the Vietnam War and retired as a Sergeant First Class (E-7). Throughout his 20 years of service, Jack earned numerous honors for his leadership and dedication, including the Bronze Star and a Meritorious Service award.

Following his retirement from the army, Jack continued to serve his community with the same commitment. He became the first Chief of the Hoover Valley Volunteer Fire Department, a role he held for nearly 10 years, during which he established the foundation for emergency response in the area. He was also the first president of the Sherwood Shores III Property Owners Association, where his vision left a lasting impact on the neighborhood he proudly called home.

Jack is survived by his loving wife, Lenora Starnes; his three children, daughter Maggie Evans, and sons Marty Starnes (Rieta) and Michael Starnes (Marlo); as well as his cherished legacy of 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

Throughout his life, Jack enjoyed tinkering in his shop, tending to his garden, and spending peaceful days in nature while fishing and hunting. Jack Martin Starnes will be remembered for his leadership and devotion to his family and community. His legacy of integrity and quiet strength will prevail in the lives of those he touched.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Compassus for the compassionate care and support they provided in Jack's home. Military honors will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.

A memorial service will follow on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Kingsland Community Church in Kingsland, Texas.
