Obituary published on Legacy.com by Royal Funeral Home, Inc. - Huntsville on Jan. 28, 2026.
Jack (Lamont) Stewart, a pioneering aerospace engineer, dedicated community leader, and the steady heart of his family and social circles, passed away peacefully at the age of 89. A man of intellect, rhythm, and immense character, Jack left an indelible mark on the aerospace industry and the Huntsville community.
Born in
East St. Louis, Illinois, Jack spent his youth in Oberlin and Yellow Springs, Ohio. He graduated from Bryan High School before attending the University of Dayton on an academic scholarship. Jack was a lifelong learner, earning an Associate Degree in Engineering and later returning to complete his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology.
Jack's professional journey was marked by significant historical milestones. After beginning his career as a metallurgical technician and IT employee, he transitioned into aerospace marketing. He held the distinction of being the second-ever African-American to achieve the level of aerospace marketing engineer in the Dayton, Ohio area while working at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
In 1984, Jack relocated his family to
Huntsville, Alabama, to serve as an Aerospace Marketing Manager for Honeywell International. He became a prominent force in the avionics and government contracts arena, managing guidance systems for sophisticated military weaponry and working with the Army, NASA, and the Air Force before retiring in 2014.
While Jack's professional resume was distinguished, his true masterpiece was the depth of his relationships. He was a man who believed that being a friend was a sacred duty. Jack dedicated himself to those he loved and built deep lasting relationships. Brenda was one such person, they traveled together played golf together, basically did life together. Brenda became part of the family. Jack also had a lasting decades-long bond with The Poker Phi Club, his golf buddies at Valley Hill Country Club, and friends. Once you bonded with Jack you had a life long friend. If there was a need, Jack was there, even if there wasn't a need, Jack would be there enjoying life with you. He was known for his quiet strength and unwavering loyalty, always the first to offer a helping hand, a listening ear, or a steady presence during life's challenges.
Jack's servant's heart extended to the most vulnerable in his community. He dedicated years of leadership to the Harris Home for Children, serving as Vice President and advocating for a stable, nurturing environment for every child. He also lent his expertise to the Boys & Girls Club, United Way, and Huntsville Hospital. In recognition of his lifelong contributions, Mayor Tommy Battle declared January 19, 2025, as "Jack Stewart Day" in the City of Huntsville. A man of many talents, Jack was a gifted trombonist, a church organist, a car aficionado (at one time owning two vintage Corvettes), and an avid camper.
His dedication to family was equally profound. He was a devoted patriarch who found his greatest joy in the presence of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He modeled a life of integrity, teaching his family that the greatest measure of a man is how he cares for those he loves.
Jack was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife, Narva Schooler, and daughter, Christa. He is survived by his children: Monty, Kent (Lillian), and Jill (Steven); son-in-law Raymond (Christa); grandchildren: Alecia (Jared), André, Jazlyn, Jendaya, Joi, and Selas; great-grandchildren: Jayden, Grayson, Delina, and Memphis; and favorite cousin Margaret; all of whom carry forward his legacy of excellence, kindness, and steadfast devotion.
