Jackie W. Deaton, Sr. passed away on November 11, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born May 9, 1948, in Tullahoma, Tennessee, Jack was the son of the late James and Kathryn Deaton. He was preceded in death by his step-mother Doris Deaton, brothers Jimmy Deaton and Michael Deaton, and sister Carolyn Howell Blanks.
Jack is survived by his best friend and wife, Shelley Chadwick Deaton, as well as his children Jackie W. Deaton Jr. (Ringgold, GA), Matthew Deaton (Chattanooga, TN), Matthew (Kyle) Forehand (Birmingham, AL), and Lindsey Forehand (St. Elmo, TN); and grandchildren Caleb, Austin, Ben, and Carter. He is also survived by his siblings Vivian (Eddie) Tipps, Vicky (John) Harley, Dianne (Sam) Hixson, and Sherry Crosslin.
A proud veteran, Jack served his country for nine years in the United States Army, including during the Vietnam War, before being medically discharged. Following his service, he earned his degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1979. Jack built a long and successful career in the automotive industry, rising from salesperson to dealership owner before retiring in 2004. Never one to sit still, he began a second career in real estate, eventually founding Deaton Real Estate Services with his wife, Shelley.
Jack was an active and devoted member of his community. He was a long-time member of the East Ridge Church of Christ and served as Lieutenant Governor for the Georgia Kiwanis. For over 30 years, he was part of the Ringgold chapter, where he dedicated countless hours to supporting children and families. He also served on the board of the National Park Partners and was a member of the American Legion Post 40, the VFW, and the Vietnam Veterans Association.
Guided by his faith, Jack's greatest joy was helping others. He was known for his generosity, his sense of humor, and his ability to bring people together-often around a table full of food he'd lovingly prepared. Cooking for his family, friends, and colleagues was one of his greatest pleasures, and he poured the same heart into his meals as he did into everything else in life.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 am Friday in the funeral home chapel with Minister Charles Cochran officiating.
Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with U.S Army conducting military honors.
Jack leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and love that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the National Park Partners (NPP), P.O. Box 748, Chattanooga, TN 37401.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 pm Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home, and Crematory, Battlefield Parkway.
