Jacquelyn Sarmiento Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home - Giddings on Jan. 9, 2026.
Funeral services for Jackie Hicks Sarmiento, 80, of Lexington, Texas, are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at the First Baptist Church in Lexington with Pastor Chris Bruce officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the church.

Jacquelyn "Jackie" Joy (Conway) Hicks Sarmiento was born on August 11, 1945 in Fort Worth, Texas to O.W. Conway, Sr. and Mary (Kidd) Conway. She graduated from Wink High School in 1963, after attending all other years of her education in Decatur, Texas. Jackie married Douglas Hicks Sr. on April 24, 1965 and they made their home in the Benbrook area when they had their first child, Marie Denise Hicks, a daughter. When work took them back to West Texas to Wink, Jackie and Doug had a son, Douglas "Bubba" Ray Hicks, Jr. Being a good wife (and an excellent cook), mother, and daughter was what kept Jackie going through her early years and she did it extremely well. As Doug's job called for him to relocate, Jackie was always up for a good challenge. His last and final job took them to Lexington, where Jackie would spend 48 years in the Lexington community fulfilling many different roles. As the children became older, Jackie would to go to work for the former Lexington State Bank, as a teller and eventually become the Vice President of the bank after it was bought out. Then, Jackie had another opportunity to use her love for dealing with the public when she went to work for the federal government, where she would be employed for 21 years, until she retired. During her career with the USDA Farm Service Agency State Office, Jackie served as Secretary to the State Executive Director's Office during the political appointment of four different State Executive Directors. In her position, Jackie worked with FSA employees, including the Assistant State Executive Director, the District Directors, the County Office Reviewers, and the entire FSA State Office Staff. She loved her job and the people she dealt with daily, and it was reflected through the many friendships she developed along the way. Once Jackie retired, she decided she needed a little job to keep her busy, and she developed the most wonderful friendship through this job: Trendy P's in Lexington with Paula Moore. Jackie worked at Trendy P's and absolutely loved helping people find gifts, clothing and accessories for an individual's unique style, and just visiting with all those who came in to shop.

Jackie was a member of First Baptist Church in Lexington and had been since she, Doug, and the kids moved to Lexington. Jackie loved her family dearly; she was invested in anything her children were involved in until the very end. After losing Bubba in 2011, she poured herself into Trendy P's and her only grandchild, Cameron, as well as anything Marie was involved in. Then Cameron gave Jackie her first great grandchild, Caden Ray Wells, in 2012. She prided herself on being a part of every milestone in his life and he filled a void in her life that no one could replace. Jackie continued to follow Marie and son-in-law, Matt, in their teaching and coaching profession and watch their games and be a huge part of their lives in supporting them and making sure they were always taken care of. Cameron also gave Jackie two more great grandchildren: Meridian Marie and McKenna Michelle Wells. Jackie spent her final days making sure Meridian knew that she was always going to be watching her and that she needed to take care of her little sister. Jackie's final pride and joy was her dog, Bubba. Her little dog brought more joy and happiness to her than almost anything, and she took him everywhere and cared for him as if he were human.

Jackie passed away the evening of Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Caldwell after fighting a long, hard fight. She was surrounded by the most amazing nurses and "angels" from St. Joseph's. There are no words, only thanks that go out to Pam, Tracey, Katie, Angie, Flo, and the others that loved on Jackie and took care of her and the family through this time. They went above and beyond to make sure Jackie was comfortable at all times and she was loved by them until the very end.

Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, O.W. (Sr.) and Mary Conway, her sister, Hope Conway, her brothers, O.W. Conway, Jr. and Wayne Austin Conway, her ex-husband, Douglas Ray Hicks, Sr., her son, Douglas Ray Hicks, Jr. and her nephew, Dwight Conway; Brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Melvin and Kay Hicks.

Her survivors include Marie (Hicks) and Matt Young of Dime Box; her grandson, Cameron Wells of Granbury; her great grandchildren, Caden Wells of Big Spring, Meridian Wells of Dime Box, and McKenna Wells of Granbury. Sisters-in-law, Marie Conway of Anna and Glenda Conway of Brenham. Nieces and nephews: Lamar and Shelli Conway of Anna, Melissa (Conway) and David Brock of Anna, Shan Conway of Brenham, Sonja Hicks, Joel Hicks, Jessica Hicks all of Cibolo, and Gabriel Hicks of Dallas. Special friends include Georgeena Arnett, Margaret Ann Bexley, Paula Moore, Phyllis Rodgers, Kim and Cara Schrader, as well as two very special people that were like her own children for over 45 years: Rhonda (Snell) Pharis and Chris Yarbrough. Jackie also has a host of other great nephews and nieces, family, and friends that she so dearly loved and thought of often.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Health Foundation in Caldwell, Texas or to the charity of one's choice.
