DECATUR - James "Jim" Stanton Adkins, Sr., 88, of Decatur, died November 24, 2023 in his residence.
Graveside service will be 10:00 AM, Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Keller Cemetery, Lovington, IL with military rites by the U.S. Navy and Macon County Honor Guard. Visitation will be 5:00–7:00 PM, Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, Decatur.
Jim was born August 30, 1935 in Moultrie County, IL, the youngest of seven, to Frank and Jane (Benton) Adkins.
He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy. Jim married Marilyn Denier on April 5, 1955 and celebrated 59 years of marriage before her passing in 2014. He was a self-employed carpet layer and jack of all trades.
Surviving are his sons: James Adkins, Jr. (Debe) of Decatur, Thomas Adkins (Trish) of Cowden; daughter, Debra Riley (Greg) of St. Francisville, LA; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren; and his best friend and companion, Sharon Bowles.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marilyn; daughter, Vickie Ratcliff; son, Jeffery Adkins; four sisters; and two brothers.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to his best friend and companion, Sharon Bowles who helped him stay in the home he built and took great pride in until his passing.

Your father's passing greatly saddens my heart. I'm sorry that I could not be there. Your dad gave me advice about the responsibilities of being a man when I first got out of the Navy. I never forgot his wisdom.
