He was born in Meadowbrook, WV, on December 25, 1937, son of the late James Layton Sr. and Filomena (Flora) Maria Marra Athey.
Jim was married on July 25, 1959, to Rose Anna Valenti Athey, who preceded him in death on January 7, 2013.
Surviving are two sons – John (Deby) Athey of Clarksburg and Steve (Bernice) Athey of Naples, FL; one daughter – Gina (Brian) Palmer of Clarksburg; two grandsons – Steve Athey of Erie, PA and Scott Athey of Clarksburg; two granddaughters – Bayley (Zach) Matthey of Morgantown and Kelsey (Christian) Drummond of Clarksburg; one great-granddaughter – Sutton Drummond of Clarksburg; and, one great-grandson – Clay Matthey of Morgantown.
Jim was a graduate of Victory High School and attended Fairmont State College. He retired from UCAR and served his country in the US Coast Guard. He attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Jim enjoyed his daily visits with his friends at McDonald's and Hardees. Above all, he loved his family fiercely, especially his granddaughters. He never missed an opportunity to brag on them. He will be sadly missed by all of those who knew and loved him.
The family would like to thank his neighbors, Nannette and John Lucas, who always went above and beyond to look after him. Their help and kindness over the years is so very appreciated. We also want to thank his Hospice aide, Sarah, and nurse, Dawn, for taking such good care of him.
Family and friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral Home, 201 Edison Street, Nutter Fort, on Friday, December 12, from 2:00 to 8:00 pm, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 pm to conclude the visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Stonewood with Father Kumar Reddimasu. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
