James was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, Class of 1955, and earned a degree in Business Administration and Applied Science from the State University of New York. He began his distinguished career in 1956, working as a consultant at Fairchild Republic, where his problem-solving skills earned him the respect of his peers and clients. Over the years, he worked as an aerospace engineer, technical writer, and technology consultant for companies like Grumman Corporation, Digital Corporation, Hewlett Packard, and Compaq.

He coached football for many years, always with a special affinity for the underdog. His love for the sport and his commitment to youth athletics left a lasting impact on the community.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, James served aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter Campbell. His love for the ocean and sailing remained a lifelong passion, along with his hobby of building and flying model and remote-controlled planes.
In retirement, James kept his mind active, becoming president of the Silver Ponds Homeowners Association and continuing his love of learning as a member of the Mensa Society.
He is survived by his wife, Claudette Barnes, whom he loved dearly; his children, Scott Barnes, Tim Barnes, Kelli Accurso, and Traci David; his ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was able to meet Lucas, his third great-grandchild this past year.
James was a man of deep integrity, compassion, and brilliance. His problem-solving abilities and warmth touched everyone who knew him. Above all, he loved his family with unmatched devotion.
In the words inscribed on a necklace he gave to his wife: "Chance cannot change my love nor time impair."
