He was born May 12, 1937, in Detroit, the son of Milton and Irene (Gleason) Blankenhagen.
In 1988, James retired from M.H. Blankenhagen Insurance Company of Livonia and moved north to his home in Torch Lake Twp. He had summered at Torch Lake since 1972.
James was a life member of the Masonic North Star Lodge in Torch Lake Village. He was also a member of the Royal Arch Masons of Monroe, Detroit Commandry #1, Moose Lodge of Livonia, Northville Eagles and the Livonia Elks.
He is survived by three sons; Larry M. of Houston, Texas, Thomas J. of Kewadin, and David J. (Sue) of Petoskey; three grandchildren, Tricia, Grace and Sam.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Masonic funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Masonic North Star Lodge.

Throughout our high school years Jim and I had a very close relationship. We were on the basketball team together and shared many other experiences. We did not keep close contact after graduation, but did make connection every so often through the years, I spoke with him within the last month, thankfully.
