James McKee Burgis

James McKee Burgis passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025. James was born January 22,1948, in Bradenton, Florida. In 1957, his family moved to the Isle of Palms, where James spent his formative years, shaping the values and character that defined his life. He later made his home in Mt Pleasant for many years before ultimately settling in McClellanville, where he continued to foster meaningful connections.

James attended Moultrie High School, where he began his lifelong journey of learning and personal growth. The education and experiences he gained during these years served as the foundation for his future endeavors and personal development.

After completing his education, James demonstrated his commitment to his country by honorably serving in the United States Army. His dedication and sense of duty were evident throughout his military service. Following his time in the Army, James embarked on a distinguished career at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, where he eventually retired. This period marked a significant chapter in his professional life, reflecting his work ethic and commitment to excellence.

James was an active and valued member of the Isle of Palms VFW Post 3137, where he participated in numerous veteran affairs and community service initiatives. He was widely recognized for his brilliant mind, kind heart, and sharp wit, all of which earned him the admiration and respect of those around him. His involvement in various community endeavors left a lasting impact and contributed to the well-being of many.

Among his many achievements, James was recognized for co-founding the Windjammer with his brother, Malcolm, in 1972. Although he later chose to step away from the business to explore other interests, his foundational role was instrumental in establishing the Windjammer as a beloved institution, which has thrived for over fifty years.

James was predeceased in death by his parents, Wallace McKee Burgis and Elizabeth Cameron Rogers Burgis, his son, Joseph McKee Burgis, as well as his brothers, John Blue Burgis and Wallace Stafford Burgis. He is survived by his sons, James Robert Burgis and Matthew Rogers Burgis, both of McClellanville; the mother of his children, Cheri Baker Burgis of McClellanville;

his brothers, Donald Cameron Burgis (Barbara) Malcolm Munro Burgis, William Robert Burgis; his sister, Margaret Elizabeth Burgis Densmore (Chauncy); his brother, David Cook Burgis (Amy Duffy) and a large extended family of nephews, nieces, grandchildren, cousins, and friends who will cherish his memory and miss him dearly.
