When I first arrived in Maynard in 2014 as the Town Planner, Jim was the Town Moderator. It only took a brief look through the Town's planning records on my arrival to see the impact Jim had already made in Maynard: Chair of this committee, member of that board, volunteer for another. His record of involvement with the Town seemed to go on endlessly. He was clearly a non-stop, community-oriented dynamo and boy, was I impressed.
About 2020 Jim approached me about joining the Maynard Planning Board. At that time, the only slot that was open was for an alternate member which usually is for a new member. To allow them time to get experience with the Planning Board goings on. I was a little embarrassed because he had so much experience, but he didn´t mind and came on and served as an alternate for a year or two and ended up back on the full-time board - this at probably, 86?! The rest of the board, although considerably younger All gone well and I think everybody on the board that he served with would say he helped them become better overall board members. Once a week I would have a meeting with Jim in person to discuss Planning Board business and different ideas and approaches he had for a variety of projects and initiatives. These times always proved invaluable for me.
When Jim finally stepped down from the Planning Board in 2024, they presented him with a award recognizing him for his longtime service to the Town. I think this meant an awful lot to him.
I will miss him and send my heartfelt condolences to Kathi & Leanne
And the rest of his family.

Jim & Vera were dear friends. His faithful service as groundskeeper at St. Matthew's in Acton was fantastic. We were able to have honest and open expressions of views despite strongly different political stances--something so desperately needed today. One memory I will not forget is his unexpectedly daring dance with Kathi at her wedding reception. It was a privilege to be his pastor for my last 7 years of ministry.

Kathi & Leanne, I am so sorry for your loss.
There are not enough words to describe how thankful I am to have had Jim in my life. I know he is at peace and he is with his beloved Vera, but please know there are many people that remain that will miss him terribly. Jim: thank you for your acceptance and your guidance, it will never be forgotten... Until we meet again dear friend.

Jim was my predecessor as moderator. Jim was very kind and generous from him to me making the transition an education and baton passing that went smoothly. I appreciate Jim's dedication and service to the town for over 50 years. We shall miss him.
