JAMES A. "JIM" DARDESS, 71, OF SHEFFIELD DIED THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2002. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE, BETTY CONWAY DARDESS AND THREE DAUGHTERS: JANET DARDESS SAAVEDRA OF SLIDELL LOUSIANA, DEBROAH DARDESS HANDLER OF NORWALK CONNECTICUT, ELIZABETH DARDESS OF SHEFFIELD. SURVIVING ALSO ARE JOHN VERBON CONWAY, NEPHEW, FOR WHOM DARDESS SERVED AS GUARDAIN FOR FOUR YEARS; SONS IN LAW ROBERT SAAVEDRA AND LEONARD HANDLER; GRANDCHILDREN JOHN AND KATIE SAAVEDRA, RACHAEL AND ALEX HANDLER.

DARDESS WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS PARENTS, EVA ZEIGLER DARDESS AND DAVID NILES DARDESS OF BESSEMER.

AFTER GRADUATING FROM BIRMINGHAM SOUTHERN COLLEGE IN 1953, HE SERVED IN THE ARMY DURING THE KOREAN WAR AND LATER GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA SCHOOL OF LAW IN 1958. HE BEGAN HIS CAREER IN SHEFFIELD WITH THE LAW FIRM OF McDONNELL AND JONES , LATER ESTABLISHING HIS OWN LAW OFFICE AND MOST RECENTLY PRACTICING WITH ATTORNEY ARLENE ROBBINS.

DARDESS HAD BEEN A MEMBER OF THE COLBERT COUNTY AND STATE OF ALABAMA BAR ASSOCIATIONS, AND THE SHEFFIELD KIWANIS CLUB. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, SHEFFIELD WHERE HE SERVED AS A DEACON, SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER AND MEMBER OF THE CHIOR.

FOLLOWING A PRIVATE INTERMENT SERVICE AT SHEFFIELD OAKWOOD CEMETERY A PUBLIC MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD AT THE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 5TH STREET, SHEFFIELD, ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2002 AT 1:30 O'CLOCK. THE FAMILY WILL RECEIVE FRIENDS IN THE CHURCH PARLOR FOLLOWING THE CEREMONY.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, MEMORIAL DONATIONS MAY BE SENT TO THE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, HOSPICE OF THE SHOALS, OR TO A FAVORITE CHARITY.
