James J. Dittmer

James J. Dittmer, age 89, of Marengo, Indiana, passed away on January 23, 2026.
James was born in Manchester Township, Dearborn County, Indiana to his parents, William and Lillian Dittmer. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force. Following his military service, James worked at Engelhard for 28 years, dedicating 14 of those years as a union officer, where he helped negotiate five labor contracts and was a strong advocate for his fellow workers, marching in Washington, D.C. to support workers' rights.
James lived an active life, in his younger years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing softball, and bowling in a league. He was a skilled mechanic, often fixing everything from small engines to cars and farm tractors. He took great pride and joy in restoring his 1971 Dodge pickup, a project that reflected both his patience and skill. James never lost touch with his inner child, he was known to go sledding into his late 70's and always enjoyed a laugh. He loved any time he could spend with his siblings and their families.
James was a man of strong faith, and a member of the Carefree Christian's Missionary Church, where he enjoyed attending services and bible studies.
James is survived by his children, James W. and Jerry A. Dittmer; and his brothers, William Joe (Nancy) Dittmer, Marlin (Dianne) Dittmer, and Kenny (Jane) Dittmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lillian Dittmer; his beloved wife of 49 years, Sharon Dittmer; and his siblings, Gordon (Kathy) Dittmer and Jenny (Glenn) Schreyer.
Visitation will be held at Rullman Hunger Funeral Home on Friday, January 30, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will take place at Rullman Hunger Funeral Home on Saturday, January 31, at 10:00 a.m., with interment to follow at Riverview Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in honor of James to the American Cancer Society.
