Dr. James F. Drane, PhD, 93 of Edinboro, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 17, 2023 at Saint Mary's at Asbury Ridge. He was born in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania on April 6, 1930, the eldest of ten children of the late James and Anna Drane.
Jimmy was raised in Chester, Pennsylvania, graduated from St. James High School and moved on to further his education and deepen his faith as a member of the priesthood. After completing his studies at Little Rock College and Georgian University, Jimmy was ordained a priest and gained his vestments in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1955. He furthered his education at Middlebury College and the University of Madrid where he received his Ph.D. Post doctorate studies followed at Georgetown and Yale Universities as Jimmy continued his love of knowledge and learning. Jimmy spoke and read at least six different languages and was always happy to add a little Latin to any conversation.
Jimmy's life took a different path in the late 1960's, and by chance of a bad snowstorm, he landed in Edinboro, Pennsylvania. Having been involved in Bioethics since the early 1960s, he went on to serve as the Russell B. Roth Professor of Philosophy and Clinical Bioethics at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania (Emeritus). Jimmy held visiting appointments at the University of Madrid, the University of Tennessee Medical School, Kennedy Institute of Ethics, and the Menninger School of Psychiatry. He received numerous grants and fellowships. He is the author of numerous books and publications including but not limited to Caring to the End, Clinical Bioethics, Becoming a Good Doctor and Religion and Ethics. His articles have appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Hastings Center Report, as well as many others.
Jimmy always enjoyed a good intellectual conversation and was always the one who family and friends turned to for advice and counsel. He will be greatly missed by family and friends alike.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his brothers, Jackie Drane and Charlie Drane, and his sister, Miriam Powell.
Survivors include his siblings, Ann Thornton, Joseph Drane, Thomas Drane (Earlene), Joan Vari (Tony), Kay Daniels, and Sally Dellaquila. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who all adored their Uncle Jimmy.
Jimmy cherished the lifelong friendships he made in Edinboro and considered many of them like family. A special thanks to his niece Lisa Sweeny (Rich) who handled many of his affairs in the last year. The family would also like to thank the staff at Saint Mary's at Asbury Ridge for taking such great care of Dr. Drane during the last seven months.
Friends and family may call at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 128 Sunset Dr., Edinboro, PA on Monday, April 24, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. until a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. For those who cannot attend, Mass will be live streamed at www.youtube.com/@OLOLEdinboro/streams.

When I was attending in college in Edinboro, Dr. Drane was my professor and employer. He was writing a book on the counter culture and I proof read it as well as typed numerous articles for him. He would come to my apartment with a handwritten manuscript which I would type for him. While there he would visit with my roommates and we engaged in some meaningful discussions with him. He was a big influence in my life and I continue to remember our life discussions.

We never knew either his name or background. He was simply the smiling, friendly man who sat in front of us at Our Lady of the Lake and always greeted us and our children and grandchildren.

He is surely missed by us all. We are sure is still smiling at us from Heaven.

Love and prayers,

The extended Sawyer family

From the 1970s when my mom did typing for him, to being at my wedding, to delivering my dad's eulogy, to helping/working with him in the library, to talking with him about God, philosophy, and more...Jim has been a big part of my and my family's life for more than 50 years and will be greatly missed.

I met this incredible man, who I called Uncle Jim, the day I was adopted. I was 5, and Uncle Jim and his wife at the time, Sissy, showed up at our house with a vehicle full of clothes and toys for us. They also brought a young crabapple tree, which is still planted out in front of the house. We would spend Christmas eve at their house and the lovely memories have lasted. Hen I attended Edinboro University, Uncle Jim would make time to come see me and I loved going to his office and just chatting with him. This is a very sad loss. So much love to his family and loved ones! He was quite a special man

My friendship with Jim dates back more than 50 years as a personal friend of the Griffen kids and an undergraduate philosophy student at ESC as it was known then . Jim was a role model and inspiration. We would greet each other on campus with a hug. Being in his presence was enlightening and I will miss him.

Author of A GOOD DOCTOR you were indeed a GOOD MAN. I admired you immensely: your intellect, your humanity, your beliefs. You were father to so many, always there in times of need. Always. Bob

Our University and community has lost a Great man. So very intelligent and kind, always a friendly smile and polite word, plus willing to spend time with you no matter what the situation might be. Always willing to purchase a raffle ticket for Boro sporting events and not shy having a piece of hard candy that I would offer. You will be missed at our athletic events and naturally at other University functions. May you find peace and memory eternal. Paul M. Belosh

Dear Family of Dr James Drane,
Dr. Drane was a friend of my late Father, Dr. James F Walker. I do not know how their paths crossed but my Father always spoke so highly
Of him. I met him a few times and could see why my Father always spoke so highly.
Please accept my deepest sympathy,
Mary Christine Walker (Erie)
