James Edward "Jimbo" Early, 72, passed away on November 13, 2025, in Williamsburg, Virginia. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Jimbo's vibrant spirit and boundless enthusiasm left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Born on May 8, 1953, in Charlottesville, Virginia, Jimbo was the son of Frederick William Early and Virginia Snyder Early. He graduated from Lane High School in Charlottesville before earning his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia. A proud Wahoo through and through, he remained a devoted supporter of UVA athletics throughout his life.

Known for his sharp mind and problem-solving skills, Jimbo brought precision and passion to every project he touched. After being a general contractor and engineer for construction in the Hampton Roads area for years, he co-founded and ran a successful business, Abatement Technical Services, and most recently served as a consultant for Omega Construction Corp. His work was marked by integrity and dedication, qualities that earned him respect across the industry.

Outside of work, Jimbo's life was rich with passions that reflected his love for the outdoors and his community. He found peace and patience flyfishing and tying flies, hiking through the Blue Ridge mountains, and bird hunting with his beloved English Setters. An experimental gardener and an enthusiastic sports fan, he cheered on his UVA Cavaliers with unwavering loyalty and proudly supported the William & Mary Field Hockey team.

His love for field hockey extended beyond the sidelines, when watching his daughters play at Walsingham and Lafayette, and later at UVA and Virginia Tech, wasn't enough, he learned the game so he could coach it himself. That same spirit of involvement defined Jimbo's approach to life: if there was a way to be part of something meaningful, he jumped in wholeheartedly.

Jimbo also had a deep affection for Christmas. For decades, he donned the red suit as Santa Claus at local businesses and events, bringing magic and joy to countless children and families. His warm hugs, mischievous smile, and infectious belly laugh made him a natural Santa and a cherished presence all year round.

He is survived by his loving wife, Loretta Early (née Moy); daughters Virginia Early (married to Steven Hall) and Samantha Early (engaged to Zachary Turner); granddaughter Nellie James Hall; brother Bill Early (married to Carroll); nephews Rick Early (married to Tamara) and Jamie Early (married to Christine); and grandnieces and nephews Cooper, Caroline, Charlotte, and Dylan.

Jimbo never met a stranger. Whether in the smallest town or the biggest city, he always seemed to know someone, and if he didn't when he walked in the door, he surely did by the time he left. Loyal, charismatic, enthusiastic, and magnetic, he lit up every room he entered. He was quick with advice (solicited or not), generous with his time and heart, and always ready with a glass of bourbon for a good story shared among friends.

Jimbo's legacy is one of laughter shared freely, love given fully, and life lived joyfully. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him-and may we all carry forward his warmth and generosity in our own lives.

In honor of Jimbo's enduring Christmas spirit as our favorite Santa Claus, new unwrapped toys are being collected for Toys for Tots. Donations may be mailed before December 12 to:
