James "Richard" Fielder, 73, of Lubbock, Texas passed away January 22, 2023 after a long battle with metastatic prostate cancer. He is remembered by his friends, family and church family as "friendly, kind, selfless, funny, generous and faithful." He was married 41 years to Karen Brown Fielder and had two sons, Russell and Kevin. After Karen died of cancer in 2016, Richard reached out to a high school sweetheart who was also widowed.
One friend said Richard proved himself "adaptable" when they married in 2018, moving from DeSoto to Lubbock, marrying Jennifer Holder and encircling her children, grandchildren, 4 dogs and 3 cats with the love he had for all his family. He eagerly supported his wife's work in ministry at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church where she was rector. He fit perfectly into the church, finding his own ministries and making new friends very easily. His dimples and smile made him a natural people magnet.
He worked at many jobs from managing an Italian restaurant to working at Pantex in Amarillo and on the Super Collider project in Waxahachie. But Richard's passion and calling was centered around Boy Scouts. He and Karen worked with both sons as they advanced in scouting. Because of his devoted service and hours and hours of volunteer work, Richard achieved the Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor Member award as an adult and continued his work throughout his life.
Richard's other great love was the Bloys Camp Meeting near Fort Davis, an annual roundup of hundreds of families that meet for an old time revival every year in August. His extended family all shared a cabin and the cousins cherish memories of seeing each other every year at the camp meeting from childhood to the present. Although weakened by cancer, Richard made the effort to attend in August and was surrounded in a cloud of love.
Richard was born July 26, 1949 in Abilene to John and Carolyn Black Fielder.
Living loved ones include his spouse, Jennifer; son Russell, his wife Lauren and 3 grandchildren, Rachel, Joshua and Jillian; son Kevin and Ami; stepfamily including Mark and Emily Gordon and her children, Meredith, Henry and Mira; his brother, Mike, and sister, Jane.
Loved ones now deceased are Karen, wife and mother of his children; his parents, John and Carolyn Fielder, and his brother Steve.
Memorial donations are suggested to St. Christopher's Lubbock Episcopal Church Outreach Fund; Hospice of Lubbock, 3702 21st St, Lubbock 79410, or any animal rescue and adoption organization.
The funeral service will be at 3 O'clock the afternoon of Saturday, February 11 at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 2807 42nd St, Lubbock 79413. Inurnment in the St. Christopher's Columbarium, followed by a reception at the church.
