James Flora Obituary

James Clark Flora, a cherished member of the Parchment community, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on July 13, 1936 to Jack and Dorothy Flora, Jim was an active part of the Kalamazoo area community his entire life. A graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School, he served his country in the United States Army before returning to Parchment and attended WMU.

He dedicated over 30 years of his life as the custodian of Parchment High School, where he touched the lives of many students, faculty, and staff members with his positivity and unwavering commitment to his work. His dedication did not go unnoticed; in 2015, he was honored with induction into the Parchment Community Hall of Fame for his years of exemplary service.

On December 22, 1959, Jim married Norma Flora (neé Elsey), his dearest love and life partner. He was a dedicated husband, and his family was his proudest accomplishment. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and countless memories. Family often referred to him as the "King of the Road," for his passion for travel. He and Norma had a love of light houses, and loved to visit South Haven, Florida, and countless cross-country road trips. Which probably inspired his collection of post cards.

Jim was a man of deep faith and compassion, always finding ways to uplift those around him. He had the ability to bring a sense of peace into any room through his heartfelt prayers, filling the space with the Holy Spirit. His selflessness extended beyond his regular duties as he volunteered for Loaves and Fishes and dedicated time to Sunnyside United Methodist Church.

In addition to exploring his faith and traveling, Jim found great joy in tending his garden, riding his bike, and listening to music. He also had a deep affection for spending time with his dogs. Jim was known for his sweet tooth. It was often said, if you put sugar in dirt, he would probably eat it.

James Clark Flora will be remembered not only for his years of dedicated service and community involvement but also for the love he shared with his family and the kindness he extended to all. His qualities of patience, humor, and grace endeared him to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His stoicism was accompanied by a good sense of humor, making every gathering a joyful occasion. His legacy of faith, compassion, and a profound love for life will continue to inspire all those whose lives he touched.

James is survived by his wife of 65 years, Norma; two daughters: Crystal (Allen) Bahr, of Portage; Amy Flora-Smith, of Portage; two grandchildren: Alissa Bahr, of South Bend, IN; and Hayden Smith, of Portage. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Bonnie Flora, of Portage; and Gladys Wills, of Palm Coast, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Jack and Dorothy Flora, three siblings: Harold Flora; Clyde Flora; and Barb Keech, and son-in-law Scott Smith.

A graveside service was held on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 12noon at the Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park Chapel, 3941 South Westnedge, Kalamazoo, MI 49008.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Saturday, July 12th at noon with a reception to follow. The family will greet friends beginning at 11am.
