Obituary published on Legacy.com by Joseph J Smith Funeral Home Inc on Oct. 26, 2022.
James Francis Patrick Griffin Jr. of Mahopac, NY passed away on October 24, 2022, at the age of 98. Jim was born on June 23, 1924 in Fall River, Massachusetts, the son of James and Susan Griffin.
Jim's father's work took the family to the Bronx, New York. After turning 18, Jim served in the United States Army during World War II. Soon after completing his service, he met Mary Monzillo through a mutual friend. Immediately smitten, he asked to take her out on New Year's Eve. They were married less than a year later on November 4, 1950. In their 70-year marriage, Jim and Mary were blessed with four children and six grandchildren. Jim was fortunate enough to meet his five great-grandchildren.
Jim was known by family and friends for his intelligence, love for reading, and curiosity about a wide range of subjects. Jim earned his degree from New York University and later worked as an electrical engineer at IBM for over 35 years. Jim's family greatly benefited from his aptitude for studying. Whether the subject was math or changing a flat tire, Jim was a patient tutor who made sure his students truly understood what he was teaching. Jim was also a man of many interests and hobbies. His grandchildren knew that a book was always a great Christmas present for Grandpa. From bread making to gardening to analyzing the various historical texts about the life of Jesus, Jim always had a pursuit to study. At age 90, he developed a prototype for a mobile app that would help him remember family birthdays. But perhaps his most time-consuming pursuit came in the summer, when he would test his pool's pH level each day to make sure it was prime for swimming. Jim will be remembered for hosting family and friends for holidays and impromptu pool parties, his love of history, slide shows of old pictures, and the story of The Boy Who Cried Wolf.
Jim is survived by his son John and his wife, Joyce, his son Kevin and his wife, Denise, his son Jimmy and his wife, Camille, his daughter, Eileen Egan, and her husband, Dennis, his grandchildren Jennifer Oliveri and her husband, Anthony, Samantha Marshall and her husband, Christopher, Amanda Holst and her husband, Damien, Stephanie Serino and her husband, Matthew, Jamie Griffin, Matthew Griffin, as well as his great-grandchildren London Holst, Matthew Oliveri, Lincoln Holst, Connor Oliveri and Alessandra Serino. Jim was predeceased by his wife, Mary, as well as his siblings, Eileen, Anita, Thomas and Robert.
