James "Gubby" Gubrud Obituary
James L. "Gubby" Gubrud, age 72, of Elkhorn, WI, passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Son of the late Leonard and Isabel (Kashuta) Gubrud, Gubby was born on May 31, 1951, in Elkhorn. On April 2, 1993, he was united in marriage to Mardonna "Dee" Babcock in Las Vegas, a destination they visited twice a year and that provided many fond and happy memories.
Gubby worked many years as a part-time bartender, along with a 35-year career with the Elkhorn Post Office, holding positions of window clerk, city carrier, and rural carrier. He took pride in servicing and delivering to his customers, and as a rural carrier liked having bragging rights to being assigned to Rt. 3, the "Big One."
Throughout the years, Gubby enjoyed many interests and activities that included his group of guy friends baseball, bowling, golf and deer hunting. On one of his hunting trips, he was the envy of his friends when they all headed off into the woods, but he stayed behind at the camp. As the rest of the group trekked through the cold and snow in search of deer, Gubby was able to bag two bucks without leaving the comfort of the cabin's deck. When the hunting party returned, they were in disbelief to see Gubby's two trophies already hanging from the tree.
In 2011, Gubby was diagnosed with primary progressive MS, which as the years passed, limited his participation in the many things he so enjoyed. Through it all, he took one day at a time, never complained, and always maintained a positive attitude.
Gubby loved his wife, his family, and many friends. He will be dearly missed. In heaven, he no doubt will be standing tall and hanging out with those who have an appreciation for the Packers and Pabst.
Gubby is survived by his devoted wife, Mardonna "Dee" Gubrud; sisters, Susan Greig and Sheri (Steve) Kaminski, both of Elkhorn; as well as many nieces and nephews. In death, he is reunited with his parents, Leonard and Isabel Gubrud; brother, Wayne Gubrud; and beloved son, Jason Gubrud.
A gathering for family and friends to celebrate Gubby's life will be planned for a future date. Haase-Lockwood & Associates Funeral Home and Crematory of Elkhorn is honored to serve the Gubrud family.
