James C. Harberson Jr.

January 28, 1941 ~ March 18, 2026

Judge Jim Harberson loved life and was loved by those who lived it with him.

A husband, father, grandfather, jurist, and athlete, he passed away surrounded by the love of his family. He is remembered as a man of integrity, balance, and quiet strength whose life was defined by devotion to fairness, to excellence both professional and athletic, and above all, to his family.

Judge Harberson shared 55 fruitful years of marriage with his loving wife, Margaret "Maggie" Harberson. Together they built a life rooted in partnership and unwavering support for one another. Their years in New York City began a lifelong journey that would see them raise two sons and build a family of which he was immensely proud.

He was the devoted father of James Harberson III and Dr. Justin Harberson. He poured his energy, guidance, and resources into ensuring their success, modeling discipline, humility, and perseverance. Nothing brought him greater joy than being "Pop Pop" to his three grandchildren - Sophie, Max, and Dorothy - who adored him and whom he loved deeply.

Judge Harberson served the City of Watertown with distinction as a City Court Judge for nearly 26 years, retiring at the age of 70. Over more than two decades on the bench, he earned widespread respect for his fairness, intellect, and steady temperament. Many of his decisions were published, reflecting both his legal acumen and his commitment to thoughtful jurisprudence. He never forgot that the law, at its best, requires balance, humanity, and restraint.

Long before his years in the courtroom, Judge Harberson distinguished himself as an athlete. In high school, he served as a tri-captain, and at Colgate University he captained the men's golf team to the Eastern Intercollegiate Championship in 1964. His talent carried him onto the professional tour for two years in the 1960s. Ultimately, he chose to pursue a career in law, enrolling at St. John's University- a decision that would define his professional life and legacy.

To those who knew him, Judge Harberson was principled yet humble, competitive yet gracious, disciplined yet deeply loving.

His life was one of purpose, dignity, and enduring love. He will be remembered always and missed beyond measure.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Earle Harberson, and by his parents, Dr. James Harberson and Winifred Harberson.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that people donate to the SPCA of Jefferson County, New York.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home. Burial in Brookside Cemetery will take place at the convenience of the family. Online condolences may be left at www.hartandbrucefh.com
