James Gunter "J.G." Harvin, Jr., 85, died peacefully Sunday, August 10, 2025 at his home surrounded by family and friends.
Born in Paxville, he was a son of the late James Gunter Harvin Sr. and Lou Hodge Harvin.
Mr. Harvin was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was U. S. Army veteran. He was a retired meat cutter at Winn Dixie with 33 years of service.
Surviving are a son, Mark W. Varner (Stacy); two sisters, Judy Harvin Coonce (Joe) and Peggy Harvin Lewis (Rusty); four grandchildren, Mark Etheredge (Amanda), Andrew Etheredge (Kristen), Bradley Winstead (Vanessa) and Brandon Deal; six great-grandchildren, Caroline Etheredge, Ashlynn Etheredge, Savannah Jensen, Levi Jensen, Samuel Winstead, Brantley Etheredge; a number of nieces and nephews; his bonus sister, Debbie Newman (Eddie); his bonus grandson, Cameron Prescott (Whitney).
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Harvin and a great-grandson, Amos Mark Allen Winstead.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 PM Tuesday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Moore and Rev. Eugene Mosier officiating.
Burial will follow in the Paxville Cemetery with military honors.
Grandsons will serve as Pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Monday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church 2401 Bethel Church Rd. Sumter, SC. 29154 or to Tuomey Hospice, 500 Pinewood Rd. Sumter, SC 29154.
